Rabbis See Danger
in Law of Return
NEW YORK (JTA) - The
Committee for Jewish Sur-
vival said that leading Or-
thodox rabbis have called on
rabbis throughout the world
to utilize the holiday of Sha-
vuot "to make their constit-
uents aware of the dangers
inherent in the present Is-
raeli Law of Return."
The group wants the law
amended so that only those
converted according to Ha-
lakha (religious law) would
be recognized as Jews. It al-
leges that "at present any
non-Jew can be classified as
a Jew" by presenting cre-
dentials "obtainable from
unreliable sources for a
small fee."
According to the commit-
tee, a joint statement on the
Law of Return was issued
by Rabbi Moses Feinstein,
president of the Union of
Orthodox Rabbis of Amer,
ica and Canada; Rabbi
David Hollander, president
of the Rabbinical Alliance of
America; Rabbi Abraham
Hecht, chairman of the Se-
phardic Rabbinical Organi-
zation; and Chief Rabbi Pin-
chus Hirshprung of Canada.
Israeli Requests
for U.S. Visas Up
TEL AVIV (JTA) - U.S.
Consular officials are giving
special scrutiny to the flood
of applications from Israelis
seeking tourist visas to visit
the United States. The rea-
son is that in the past, too
many of the "tourists" de-
cided to remain.
Immigrants from the So-
viet Union 1,vho apply for
American visas receive the
most careful checks as it is
suspected by U.S. officials
that many of them do not
intend to return.
An estimated 40,000 Is-
raelis are expected to visit
the U.S. this summer de-
spite serious economic diffi-
culties. The American Con-
sular Offices have been
jammed for weeks. Clerks
are dealing with as many as
200 applicants a day which
is an unusually large num-
ber.
According to John Peters,
first secretary in charge of
consular operations, only
five percent of the appli-
cants are rejected. But most
of the others have a lor„ ; .
wait because of the work
load and tighter checking
processes.

Wiesenthal Foe
Is Disbarred
BONN - Manfred Roe-
der, leader of a right-wing
German political faction
whose adherents had
shouted anti-Semitic epi-
thets at Nazi-hunter Simon
Wiesenthal during a recent
trial, has been disbarred by
the disciplinary committee
of the Bar Assocation in
FrankfortamMain and can
no longer practice law.
In February, Roeder was
given a seven-month prison
sentence for incitement dur-
ing a slander case again s t
him filed by Wiesenthal.
