EIGHT MONTHS AGO,
Tom Goulas and Connie
Estathiou . opened their
Honey Tree restaurant on
Orchard Lake Rd., between
12 and 13 Mile . . . a
110-seater with American
and Greek specialties . . . It's
mainly American, but the
Greek salad is among the
best we've had ... and their
souvlaki sandwich is a
choice morsel.
One would expect to see
shish kabob, moussaka, pas-
titsio, spinach and cheese
pie or lemon egg drop soup
. . . but not chop suey, Ital-
ian spaghetti or clam chow-
der.
Tom's first job in the
United States was for
Marty Horowitz in 1970 at
Marty's Delicatessen -

. . . making corned beef,
pastrami, etc. sandwiches
. . . Connie took over as
boss when Marty left in
1970 . . . and had it for over
three years.
The two very personable
brothers-in-law, Tom and
Connie, enjoy a very clean
and wholesome place . . .
with reasonable prices
. . . The soups are all
home-made and the atmos-
phere is one of easy pleas-
antness . . . Indicative of
the good service are girls
like waitress Nancy
Storms . . . and hostess
Mary Jo McCarthy, al-
ways with a smile while
walking from booth to
booth, table to table ask-
ing folks if everything is
all right while refilling
their coffee cups.
The Greek salad is real
. . . no phony . . . Tom hav-
ing a restaurant in Athens,
Greece, before coming here,
prepares it as it should be
. . . No anchovies, but upon
request, as in Greece, says
Tom, it will be given to you
on the side . . . The feta
cheese we found to be a mild
delicacy . . . not goaty tast-
ing as is the fault of many
who try to cut corners the
wrong way . . . The dress-
ing is their own secret and
well they should be proud of
the fact that no other res-
taurant in Michigan has it.
MEL BALL AND COL-
OURS are still packing
them in with wall-to-wall
people at Yesterdays in the
Sheraton Southfield on
Nine Mile Rd. . . . The
group's repertoire has in-
creased enormously as it
plays in accordance with the
audience.
BACK IN 1932, Harry
Tyner opened his Checker
Bar-B-Q on Brush . . . with
people eating the famed
bar-b-q spare ribs as fast as
Harry's rotisserie operation
could put them out
Then son Leonard returned
home from the Army in
1942 and son Milt shortly
after . . . both joining him
at the place folks from all
over the country, especially
visiting celebrities, got "the
best ribs anywhere" . . . To-
day, Leonard still has the
Checker Bar-B-Q carry-out
in Lincoln Center . . . with
wife Marge and son Howard
. . . plus a beautiful-looking
old-style rotisserie in the
large back room making the
ribs and chicken with much
efficiency . . . The Miami
embers, made another way,
are a secret taste tanger.
GIVE AN ORCHID TO
the lassie car valet at Bru-
netti's Seafood Italian Villa
. . . Very pleasant with a
"Have a nice evening" both
when she took our car and
returned it later.
Sounds of Karisma group
was closing . . . with
French Connection, three
guys and a gal, due to open
next for listening and danc-
ing.
So much big demand, that
coming in June 14, will be
the very fine Tom Powers
Show for seven weeks . . .
prior to opening in August
