LISTENING
POST

BEAUTIFUL SCE-
NERY overlooked the lovely
greens during Crescent
Shrine Club's Annual
Sports Night in its new
quarters, Glen Oaks Golf
and County Club.
About the food, ask Mor-
rie Schwartz, bossman of
the Sunoco station on
Southfield and 10 Mile, how
it was . . . Morrie's son,
Gary, seemed to enjoy it,
though .. . Speakers Vince
Doyle, WWJ Sportscaster
and Friday Macklem, De-
troit Lions equipment man-
ager, both'sounded like they
never should have shown up
. . . Thanks to Crescent
President Leon Serling for
drawing the drapes . . . the
sun was that bright . . . Eli
Springer did a better job of
wating on Jimmy Laker's
guests than the waitresses
did . . . They can't drive a
cab either, says Eli . . . Ben
Zussman took off his hair
piece to prove how much
he doesn't need one.
QUESTION . . . Why
hasn't the city of Southfield
changed the street name of
Agnew to.something else?
CONGRATS . . . to
Dorothy and Morris Fish-
man on their 35th Anniver-
sary of happy wedded to-
getherness . . . June 8.
DRIVING THOUGHT a
small town in Omaha, Jess
Kalter was stopped and
cross-examined by the gent
who introduced himself as
sheriff of the county .. .
Jess asked for his creden-
tials and the sheriff took a
badge out of his pocket to
show — and looked a little
sheepish . . . The badge was
a tin affair marked, "Space
Ship Patrol." . . . His nine-
year-old son had switched
badges.
LAST WEEK, Roy Eisen
looked up from his newspa-
per in time to see wife Ruth
dashing out of the front
door . . . "Going shopping?"
he called after her . . . "I
haven't got time," she called
back. "I'm just going to get
a few things."
BRYON KAHN, six-
year-old son of Lil and Mor-
rie Kahn, had been prom-
ised by Lil to be ready to
take him to the recent carni-
val at Tel-12 Mall "in about
five minutes." . . . He
waited around for what
seemed an eternity . . . and
then timidly inquired,
"Mommy, are minutes any
longer than they used to
be?"
ARLENE KINGSTON
wanted an unusual birthday
gift for Harvey Schwartz-
berg . . . Remembering
that he always watched
"Mary Hartman, Mary
Hartman" on television, in
which the father is known
as "The Fernwood Flasher",
Arlene called Seymour
Schwartz to get her the likes
of someone playing the
dad's role . . . On Harvey's
birthday, he came to the
door where a gent in a rain-

coat exclaimed, "I'm the
West Bloomfield flasher",
opening his raincoat to re-
veal a bare body and then
running away . . . The guy
must have thought Seymour
was pulling a gag on him,
also . . . telling him to go to
Watergate, the street where
Harvey lives.
OVERHEARD . . . at
Steve Petix Clothier on
Southfield . . . Wife to hus-
band, "Are you trying to tell
me what kind of suit you
think I should choose for
you?"
NEW CAREERS after 40
for women are still possible,
says Sidney Frumkin,
whose wife Marilyn, is a
recent graduate of Wayne
State U's journalism school,
and now publicity director
for metro Detroit Israel
Bonds.
MAID GAVE NOTICE
to Emma Fogel that she was
leaving . . . and when
Emma asked her whether it
was to better herself, she re-
plied, "Oh, no ma'am, I'm
just getting married."
SEEING SIGNS .. . by
once very active veterinarian
Dr. Henry Raskin . . . out-
side a vet friend's office . .
"Hospital Zone—No Bark-
ing."
TUESDAYS ARE offi-
cial meeting nights of
Knights of Pythias No. 55
. . . but unofficially, it is
rapidly becoming Wednes-
day eves at Darbys Stanley
Steamer in Oak Park . . .
Latest former member of
years back who has become
reinstated in Detroit No. 55
is Mickey Shorr, one of oui-
town's first biggie disc jock-
eys . . . now a successful
businessman out.Woodward
way as the "in-dash king" of
the audib equipment.
CALLING MORRIE
SCHLUSSEL . . . owner of
AA Mufflers & Brakes on
W. Seven Mile Rd. . . . Re-
member when you had that
Pure Station on Nine Mile in
Oak Park and a customer
told you about putting a
blanket over the front of his
car that cold night? . . .
When it stared off the next
morning, he congratualted
himself . . . Then came the
realization . . . The car was
a Corvair with the engine in
the rear."
SOME THOUGHTS
. . . In the old days, the
man who saved money was
a miser . . . Nowadays he's
a wonder . . . Americans
are getting stronger . . .
Twenty years ago it took
two people to carry $20
worth of groceries . . . To-
day a child can do it . . . If
you think it's hard to meet
new people, pick up the
wrong golf ball . . . Fellows
losing their hair shouldn't
feel bad . . . There's one
thing about baldness . . .
It's neat . . . We were born
in a very fortunate age . . .
The term "Juvenile delin-
quency" wasn't thought of
. . . We were just known as
pests.

In focusing on the most
interesting and successful
renewal projects that have
emerged in the 1970's, Red-

approaches can be taken to
meet central city needs.

HAIFA — A new tourist
attraction has been created
out of old tires for the off-
shore waters of Haifa, Is-
rael's northern Mediterra-
nean port city.
The artificial reef cover-
ing several thousand square
feet of area and almost 50
feet deep was built from 1,-
000 cement-weighted used
tires, in the first project of
its kind in the Eastern Med-
iterranean. The reef is ex-
pected to attract an enor-
mous new population of sea
life.
' It will first be subjected
to scientific information-
gathering for a one-year
period before being opened
to the public use.

Economic Slump
Cuts Egypt Budget

TUNIS (ZINS) — Indica-
tions of economic problems
in Egypt have been con-
firmed with a $265 million
cut in the 1976 budget to
$9.4 billion. This excludes
military spending, the fig-
ures for which are not made
public.
At the heart of the coun-
try's economic problem is
the rapid increase in the
balance of payments deficit
which reached $4.5 billion
last year.
Egypt's debts now total
$6.9 billion — not including
military debts to the Soviet
Union.
