Flint People Make News BOSTON — A majority of American public schools are still ignoring the First Amendment and U.S. Su- preme Court rulings up- holding the principle of sep- aration of church and state, according to the findings of an Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith survey. The survey, made public by Theodore Freedman, di- rector of ADL's program and community service divi- sions, showed: • 91.5 percent of the schools conduct holiday con- certs with religious content, nearly all Christological re- ferences, and 74.6 percent use songs with Jewish refer- ences, but not liturgical music. • 45.9 percent of the schools stage religious pag- eants at Christmas and at Easter. • 56.5 percent use reli- gious holiday decorations such as crucifixes, menor- ahs and Stars of David — 23.5 percent observe only Christian holidays and 33 percent observe both Chris- tian and Jewish holidays. • 52 percent provide space or "released time" for religious instruction.
