OBITUARIES

Noted Surgeon Dr. Goodman Dies

NEW YORK — Dr. Ber-
nard.A. Goodman, a former
New York City surgeon and
chairman of the board of
Ex-Lax Inc., died Sunday at
age '77. Dr. Goodman was
the father of New York
State Senator Rby M. Good-
man.
A detached retina impair-
ing his vision caused Dr.
Goodman to begin a second
career as a corporate execu-
tive for Ex-Lax and its var-
ious pharmaceutical subsid-
iaries.
He was a director and
company officer for a num-

ber of years before assum-
ing the board chairmanship
in 1965. Since 1971, he had
been honorary chairman,
but had continued to serve

Dr. Goodman began his
practice of general abdom-
inal surgery in 1928, work-
ing mostly at what is now
New York University Hospi-
tal. He was the author of
numerous articles for medi-
cal journals.

and remained active in
many philanthropies.
For more than 25 years,
Dr. Goodman had been a
trustee of a family founda-
tion that aided medical
and educational causes in
the United States and Is-
rael.

at age 75.
Born in Toronto, Ontario,
Mrs. Shalit lived in Detroit
prior to moving to Sherman
Oaks, Calif., where she lived
for the past three years. She
was a member of Women's
American ORT, National
Council of Jewish Women,
Brandeis University Na-
tional Women's Committee,
Hadassah, a past member of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek and a
former member of the
Franklin Hills Country
Club.
She leaves her husband,
Carl H.; a daughter, Mrs.
Sidney (Leona) Shear of
Sherman Oaks; a brother,
Sam Greisman of Louisville,
Ky.; two sisters, Mrs. Ann
Salter and Mrs. Tina
Browning, both of Beverly
Hills, Calif.; four grandchil-
dren and two great-grand-
children. Interment Los
Angeles.

ANNA BRENNER died

May 20. She leaves two sons,
Morris and Jerry; a brother,
Benjamin Acker of Califor-
nia; three sisters, Mrs. Sam
(Dorothy) Anstandig, Mrs.
Leo (Sarah) Hoffman and
Mrs. Benjamin (Bessie) Ze-
lonka; nine grandchildren
and six great-grandchil-
dren.
