at the new Jewish Commu-
nity Center.
Rabbi Levin was cited for
his close to 40 years as Av
Bas Din in Detroit and "the
dedicated manner in which
he served the cause of
maintaining the strength of
traditional Jewish life."
David Hermelin, co-chair-
man, opened the evening.
The anthems were sung by
Cantor Shabtai Ackerman,
the Hamotzi recited by Ju-
lius Rotenberg and Birkat
Hamazon was led by Na-
than P. Rossen, honorary
co-chairmen.
Hyman Safran, general
chairman, served as toast-
master for the program
following the dinner. Saf-
ran stated, "The Vaad
Harabonim is a vital and
essential institution in our
community. In addition to
the manifold function, the
Vaad Harabonim took
upon themselves the obli-
gation to defray the cost of
the supervision of kashrut
at the new Jewish Com-
munity Center."
Greetings were heard
from Rabbi James I. Gor-
don, vice president of the
Vaad Harabonim and Rabbi
Berel Wein, son-in-law of
Rabbi Levin, who spoke on
behalf of the family.
The guest speaker was the
rosh yeshiva of Telshe Col-
lege in Cleveland, Ohio,
Rabbi Mordechai Gifter,
whose address underscored
the important role of the
Vaad Harabonim in the con-
tinuity of Jewish life and of
the particular contribution
of Rabbi Levin to this scene.
Rabbi Chaskel Grubner,
executive director of the
Council, made a presenta-
tion to Rabbi Levin in the
presence of the officers of
the organization.
Rabbi Levin's response
touched on contemporary
problems and emphasized
the role of the Vaad Hara-
bonim in the Jewish corn-
munity.
