The Best of Everything
By Danny Raskin
THE QUESTION OF-
TEN arises . Is Larco's
on W. McNichols as good in
the evening as it is in the
afternoon?
To get an answer in our
own way of thinking, we
went both times the same
day recently.
- The lunch is a crowded af-
fair . . . everybody from
everywhere comes for the'
delicious fare offered up
brothers Pete, Nick and
Mike Larco . . . but things
run so smoothly, nobody
has to wait very long . . .
Our waiter was an excellent
one, Arnie Maasarani . .
courteously efficient, fast
and very much on the ball
. ._. The small steak and
spaghetti is among the city's
finest luncheon offerings.
For dinner, our waitress
was unlucky enough to
have too many tables, but
tried very hard to please
BEERS & WINES
. . . Arnie had just fin-
ished serving a party in

IS IT POSSIBLE that
we have finally come to the
end of our search after al-
most 30 years? . . . That
creamy off-white fried
shrimp sauce we once loved
at the Town Pump was
made for us by Doug Der-
ello, executive chef at the
Banyan Tree on Long Lake
Rd. and Livernois in Troy
. . . Give a big hip-hip-hoo-
ray . . . Nobody could find
it for us . . . Not even Bob
Allison with his multitude
of WWJ "Ask Your Neigh-
bor" loyal listeners . . .
Even Roy Andries De Groot,
one of the leading gourmet
chefs of our times tried . .
But Doug Derello has done
the trick . . . and it's good
. real good!
It was Mother's Day . . .
with dining in quiet eleg-
ance at the Banyan Tree
. . . and waiter Ray How-
ard doing a fine job of effi-
cient service . . . One of the

AFTER 48 YEARS, Oak-
land Bath House has finally
Closed its doors . . . Every-
body from all walks of life,
barring none, visited the
Oakland baths at one time
or another . . . People like
Mayor Richard Reading,
then Mayor Frank Murphy,
politicans galore, racket
boys, newspaper writers;
butchers, bakers, candles-
tick makers . . . Bootleg-
gers when Charlie Meltzer
had it in the prohibition
days . . . He passed on in
1940 and son Harry took
over.
A new Oakland Bath
House is slated to be built
. . . with negotiations now
going on for a possible site
on Northwestern between
12 and 13 Mile.
EVER MAD pumpkin
cheese cake? . . . It's good
. . . at Jakks on Greenfield
and 10.
WE ONCE HAD the
privilege of watching a great
French chef prepare a salad
dressing . . . He'd made it
countless times and was
world famous for it . . . But
we noticed that after he'd
add a dash of this and a
pinch of that, he'd taste the
dressing, then proceed to
add a little more of one in-
gredient or- another . . . To
a person geared to standard
procedures in many ways,
this seemed pretty hit-and-
miss . . . Why, we asked,
didn't he write down the
