Rabbi Bernard Heller Dies,
Directed U-'M Hillel Office

NEW YORK — Rabbi
Bernard Heller, organizing
director of the Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundation at the
University of Michigan, died
May 6 at age 77.
Rabbi Heller, who was
the U-M Hillel director from
1930 to 1940, was educated
at the University of Penn-
sylvania, Columbia Univer-
sity, Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion,
U-M and the Jewish Theo-

Cultural Restitution Inc., an
organization charged with
restoration of cultural prop-
erty looted by the Nazis
from Jewish families, insti-
tutions and organizations.
In 1951 Rabbi Heller
spent several months in the
pulpit of the Progressive
Union of Bombay, the only
liberal Jewish congregation
in India, and helped start a
program of religious educa-
tion for Jewish youths and
adults in India.
Rabbi Heller was the au-
thor of several books, and
lectured in New Zealand,
Australia, the Philippines,
Hong Kong, Japan, Turkey
and West Germany.
