The founder of the Yid- dish theater was Abraham Goldfaden. From his crea- tive efforts in Romania there emerged one of the world's most notable theatr- ical achievements whose high standards were emu- lated globally. Goldfaden conceived the idea for a Yiddish theater after he came in contact' with the Broder Singers in Romania. The group sang and acted out Yiddish mel- odies, among them Gold- faden's. According to the Encyclopaedia Judaica: "He then conceived the idea that the dramatic ef- fect of the songs and imper- sonations could be height- ened if they would be combined with prose dia- logues and woven into an in- teresting plot. By 1880 his troupe was giving performances throughout Russia and his phenomenal success was encouraging theatrical ven- tures by other enterprising actors and librettists. "The Yiddish theater ex- panded and flourished until 1883, when the Russian gov- ernment, fearing this new mass medium, banned-per- formances in Yiddish. This action compelled authors, actors, and producers to migrate to other lands. Yid- dish theaters were estab- lished in Paris, London, and New York. "In 1887 Goldfaden was invited by some of his ac- tors who had moved to New York to join them, but when he arrived he encountered severe compe- tition from producers who had preceded him and from scriptwriters who were even more prolific than he. "He found Europe more congenial and returned to produce and direct perform- ances of his plays in Lon- don, Paris, and Lemberg. He returned to the United States in 1903 and spent his last five years in New York." SHOLEM ALEICHEM a few singers and rehearsed with them scenarios corn- posed by himself. The report, which called for a ban on the shipment of Pershing ground-to-ground missiles to Israel, also sug- gested that the United States stop supplying Israel certain arms already ap- proved, such as the Lance short-range missile and so- phisticated hardware for Israeli aircraft. "The United States and the Soviet Union should agree to consult with each other before undertaking major shipments of arms to the Middle East," the report said. But it went on to sug- gest that the United States should unilaterally issue a "moratorium," on certain sophisticated weapons bar- ring such U.S.-Soviet coop- eration.
