Pollock's 'Gabriel' Novel Found Offensive

To quote the publisher
(McGraw-Hill Ryerson),
"Gabriel" by Harry Pollock
is "a picaresque romp
through the childhood and
adolescence of Gabriel, the
son of Polish-Jewish immi-
grants. This is a novel of
changes and changing sensi-
bilities, set in Toronto of the
Thirties."
Unfortunately for the
publisher and the author,
"Gabriel" offends more sen-
sibilities than it describes.
There are few saving graces
for this novel of a young
man's blow-by-blow, dream-
by-dream sexual education
through puberty and be-
yond.
Nothing is spared the
reader, again unfortun-
ately.

to bring some deeper
meaning into the contin-
uous descriptions of sexual
exploits of young Gabriel.

Little is left to the imagi-
nation in this story of a boy
who breaks with his people's
traditions, and with most of
society's morals, while
growing up in his adopted
city. Towards the end of the
book, as we reach the end of
the 1930s, glimpses of Nazi
Germany are interspersed

with Gabriel's passions.
Whatever the intent,
"Gabriel" by Harry Pollock
deserves a "not recom-
mended" rating.
