Hashish-Smoking Hazards
Found by Weizmann Profs
REHOVOT, Israel — New
evidence on the hazards of
hashish was presented re-
cently by researchers at the
Weizmann Institute of
Science.
While hashish smoking is
still going strong, the argu-
ments against it have fal-
tered for lack of any defini-
tive proof that it is bad for
one's health.
Although numerous stud-
ies throughout the world
have concentrated, so far
without success, on explain-
ing how hashish acts on the
brain, attention has only
recently been focused on the
damage it causes elsewhere
in the body — both through
its psychoactive components
(which affect the state of
mind) and its non-psychoac-
tive components.
Dr. Rachel Goldman
and Avraham Raz of the
Weizmann Institute's
membranes and bioregula-
tion laboratory are inves-
tigating aspects of the
mechanism and sequence
of events that follow the
interaction of hashish

membranes.
A 15-minute exposure to
low concentrations of either
of two hashish compounds
— and their subsequent
transfer to a fresh culture
medium — results in the
death of all the cells within
24 hours. Continuous expo-
sure to the hashish com-
pounds, however, causes
macrophage death within
three hours.
