Outrage Voiced Over Agnew
Attack on Israel's Supporters

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Spiro Agnew," who left the
office of the vice presidency
in 1973 after pleading no
contest to a charge of in-
come tax evasion, attacked
Zionism and.the supporters
of Israel in Congress Tues-
day on NBC-TV's "Today"
show.
Listeners in - New York
and Washington voiced com-
plaints about his comments
in an interview with Bar-
bara Walters that was ini-
tiated in connection with his
novel. "The Canfield Deci-

Agnew was disbarred as a
lawyer and that he cur-
rently makes his living in

Sadat was given adequate
coverage and Agnew agreed
he has. Agnew's appearance
was his first on television
since resigning from office.
A number of news com-
mentators also challenged
Agnew on his biased anti-
Zionist stand and especially
on his accusations against
the media.

sion," whose central charac-
ter is a vice-president of the
United States.
(Scores of calls protest-
ing Agnew's statements
were received by The Jew-
ish News.)
Agnew said the Zionist
lobby in the United States is
forcing the U.S. "into a dis-
organized approach to a
Middle East policy." He said
the U.S. is allowing the
lobby to help project Israeli
imperialism. He also
charged that American Pol-
icy in the Mideast is not
even-handed and that the
press is overlooking Israeli
aggression.
Agnew said that the me-
dia is controlled by Zionists
and is certainly sympathetic
to the Zionist cause. He also
charged that the press does
not give the Arab countries
fair coverage and is not dif-
ferentiating between the
racial Arab states and those
friendly to the U.S. like free
enterprise nations such as
Saudi Arabia.
He also said that al-
though the U.S. has had a
long history of friendship
with Arab countries they
were not now receiving the
same support as Israel.
Agnew was sentenced to
three years of unsuper-
vised probation and a fine
of $10,000 in 1973. Ms.
Walters pointed out that
