The Sapirs were married in 1974, two years after the death of the former Finance Minister's first wife, Shos- hana, who also succumbed to cancer. Sapir died of a heart attack in the summer of 1975. Emma Schreier Emma Schreier, past president of the Greater Detroit Council of Pioneer Women, died May 5 at age 74. Born. in Russia, Mrs. Schreier lived 67 years in etroit. Meckler, Edited Jewish Day NEW YORK — David L. Meckler, editor-in-chief of The Day — Jewish Journal, which ended publication in 1971 after 57 years as the largest Yiddish-language newspaper in the U.S., died last week at age 85. Mr. Meckler previously had been editor of The Jew- ish Morning Journal, which was merged in 1953 with The Jewish Day. Born in Lithuania, Mr. Meckler joined The Journal shortly after his arrival in the U.S. in 1907. He was the author of books in Yiddish about the Hasidim and wrote in En- glish, "Miracle Men: Tales of the Chassidim," and "Miracle Men: Tales of the Baal Shem and His Chassi- dim." Chaim Goldwater, Detroit Rabbi's Kin Rabbi Chaim Ruven Gold- water, father of Southfield Rabbi Harry E. Goldwater of Ha-Ner Ha-Tamid and rabbi emeritus of the United Synagogue of Greater Leeds in England, died April 13 at age 86. The elder Rabbi Goldwa- ter served his congregation continuously for more than 50 years. He was the past president of the Rabbinical Association of Northern England. Besides the Detroit rabbi, Rabbi Goldwater is survived by another son, Dr. Leo of Leeds; three daughters, Mrs. Betty Hall of London, Mrs. Ray Hardy of Amster- dam, Holland, and Mrs. Essie Myers of Leeds; a sis- ter in London; and 11 grand- children. She leaves her husband, Max; a brother, Samuel Wang, Philanthropist' PAULA EVA SHERBERG MALKA SHERBERG and MOISHE CHAIM SHERBERG NEW YORK — Samuel H. Wang, a shipping execu- tive, philanthropist and an active member of the Zionist Organization of America, died May 2 at age 59. Mr. Wang was a member of the ZOA administrative board and national chair- man of its public affairs committee. He was known as a generous contributor to the ZOA and to other Jew- ish causes. Mr. Wang was a pioneer in the practice known as "jumboizing" vessels — cut- ting a ship in two and in- serting a new and larger midbody, increasing the carrying capacity of the "new" ship substantially. And grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who died May 6, 1942, and whose yahrzeit is marked 34 years to the day. Sadly missed and never to be forgotten by Harry Sherberg. He was active in the Israel Bond Organization, the American Friends of the Hebrew University and the American Friends of Boys- town Jerusalem and trea- surer of the New York Board of Rabbis Advisory Council. - IDA MITZ Who passed away May 8, 1955.
