to the porcupine and asked
him: "Why do you insist on
raising your quills when the
wolf comes near you? Don't
you-realize the wolf is really
a splendid fellow? Every
other animal likes him and
would be willing to do any-
thing for him. Why must
you be different?"
"Because," the porcupine
answered, "he wants to eat
me-- that's why."
"Oh, that's sheer non-
sense," the fox responded.
"Just show him that you
trust him, and he won't eat
you."
"How do you know?",
the porcupine queried.

so very sharp," the porcu-
pine protested.
"Aw, bosh," said the
fox. "They are not as long
and as sharp as some of
the animals think. I had
the impression that the
teeth were really far from
perfect and may be in fact
quite brittle."
"I still say," the porcupine
responded, "I would not like
to put my head in the wolf's
mouth."
"But you could do it in a
gradual way," the fox sug-
gested. "I think the wolf
would really be very peace-
ful, and you wouldn't have
any need at all to make use
of your quills."
Then the porcupine an-
swered, "Yeh, but what
would happen if the wolf
were to snap his jaw shut?
Then my quills would be al-
together useless. No thanks.
I have a feeling you're com-
pletely wrong. In fact, I
value my head so much that
I am not going to trust it to
your impressions."
Moral: Thus does tiny
