COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS ORGANIZED

Meeting of Rabbis held on Third day of Parsha Shmos, 5690 (January 21, 1930) at
Congregation Emanuel, Woodrow Wilson and Taylor Roads, Detroit, Michigan.
Present were Rabbis Ashinsky, Osishkin, Eisenman, Thumim, Strauss, Fischer, Za-
ger, Horowitz, Fein, and Stollman.
Decisions made:
1) Organize to strengthen quality of Jewish life and observance in the community.
2) Creation of Federation of Synagogues to form VAAD Ho'Eer.
:3) Decision that participating Rabbis will not issue individual certification of Kash-
rut — all certifications will come from a central committee of the VAAD.
In 1938, Rabbi Leizer Levin arrived in Detroit and began to play an active role in the
Council which eventually led to his becoming the President and "Av Bes Din of the
Council". The expanded activity of the Vaad Harabonim necessitated its moving from a
one desk operation on Linwood to the eventual purchase of its own headquarters. At
the helm of its operations came Rabbi Chaskel Grubner who had been with the Council
since 1950 as Executive Director. Through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Roten-
berg and the Karbal, Safran and Fischer families, the first building was acquired
Seven Mile Road in 1963. Within ten years, the population shift necessitated a change
to the present office located at 17071 W. 10 Mile Road in Southfield, Michigan.
The Council of Orthodox Rabbis, enjoys the supoort of all segments of our commu-
nity. Its membership reflects a unity of European and American trained Orthodox
Rabbis, all working for the same goals originally set forty-five years ago. The ex-
panded services of the VAAD now include:
KASHRUTH: The Vaad Haraboriim renders reliable and uniform Kash-
ruth supervision over all establishments that cater to the needs of the Jewish
population, such as Kosher meat markets, slaughterhouses,-caterers and bak-
cries. Precise
i and scientific information on Kosher products is readily avail- 7
able. Advi ce and help on Kashuring of homes is available through our office.

The c is the local symbol of Kashruth certification.

HONORING

RABBI LEIZER LEVIN

For his devotion as spiritual leader of close to 40 years in our community. As
President and Av Beth Din of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Greater De-
troit, he is the titular head of the Orthodox community and he has served this
role with great distinction.

,

HETI' DIN: .In the tradition of our people, the Vaad offers to any individual or
group an opportunity to settle differences before a Rabbinical Court (Beth Din) rather
than resorting to litigation . in a civil court. Inquiries regarding Jewish law, and ritual,
arc expertly answered.
The tictii Din also spends much time in establishing the personal status of many
individuals - who are in Israel and abroad.
CONVERSION AND ADOPTION: All cases handled in accordance with HALAHA
to obviate the very serious and often tragic consequences that arise from this status.
FA IIA COI NSEL!NG: A Rabbi is always available to counsel on marital prob-
lems, family relations and personal adjustments.
CHAPLAINCY PROGRAM: To ameliorate -the complex probleins of the aged in our
community, the VAAD HARABONIM designed Rabbi Joshua Sperka as its Chaplain
who regularly visits and provides religious services to our Nursing, Convalescent
Homes and Hospitals.
LIBRARY: A Rabbinic reference library has been established, and is available to
the entire Jewish Community.
At DITORI•M: The auditorium is available for Torah study and cultural meetings,
lectures and sheurim. The study of the "DAF YOMI" takes place daily.
