TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
telephones at the Labor
Party office here were omi-
nously quiet last week. Ap-
prehension was further ar-
oused when officials and
employes picked up their
receivers and found the lines
were dead.
A call was placed to the
phone company from an-
other office where the lines
were functioning. No, a tele-
phone information officer
told the caller, there was
nothing wrong with the La-
bor Party office phones that
a payment of IL 200,000
owed the' phone company
couldn't fix.
The lines would be opened
again for business once the
payment was made, the of-
ficer said firmly.

Dr. Stephen King, right, president of Etz Chaim
Congregation in Atlanta, and his wife, smile after a brief
encounter with the Secret Service. The couple, taking
their loaned Torah to services were approached by
agents, who thought the scroll suspicious. When deter-
mined it was harmless, the couple was allowed to pass.

Agents Find Torah Is Harmless

ATLANTA, Ga. — The
Secret Service has decided
that a Torah scroll is not a
threat to the President.
According to Vida Gold-
gar, assistant editor of The
Southern Israelite, the pres-
ident of the new Etz Chaim
Congregation was stopped
by a Secret Service agent as
he brought an afghan-cov-
ered Torah scroll to a pre-
arranged Shabat service
planned at the Perimeter
Mariott Hotel. The congre-
gation doesn't have a perma-
nent home.
Little did the president of
Etz Chaim know that Presi-
dent Ford had scheduled' a

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
55-year-old Egyptian
woman is recuperating in
Hadassah Hospital after
undergoing open heart sur-
gery there.
The woman, Mrs. Padwa
Kordiyeh, came to Hadas-
sah, accompanied by her
son, a Cairo doctor, after
hearing about the hospital
over Israel Radio's Arabic
program, "A Doctor Behind
the Microphone."
Her son, apparently, was
one of the people who con-
vinced her to make the jour-
ney to Jerusalem. She made
contact with Hadassah Hos-
pital through a married
daughter who lives in the
Gaza Strip and entered Is-
rael via the Allenby Bridge
from Jordan.

campaign stop at the hotel.,
Arriving at the hotel, the
man was stopped by a Se-
cret Service agent who in-
quired about the "suspi-
cious-looking" object. The
man's wife gave a brief de-
scription, whereupon the
agent uncovered the Torah
and examined it. Deciding
the scroll to be harmless,
the agent let the couple pass
while a-second agent stood
by their side until the Presi-
dent had left the building.
The couple proceeded to
congregation's meeting
place and regular Shabat
services were held as sched-
uled.

RESORT

SOUTH HAVEN, MICHIGAN

Mrs. liana Batzri, who
runs. the radio program,
visited the -Egyptian
woman in the hospital and
was told that the program
was very popular in Egypt.

Mrs. Batzri said she fre-
quently receives letters
from Arab countries asking
specific medical questions
to be answered on the pro-
gram. She said the doctors
themselves answer the ques-
tions on the program, in He-
brew or English, to ensure
the listeners that the an-
swers are authentic.

Mrs. Batzri said she had
several times handled the
"technical" details to allow
someone from an Arab
country to come to Hadas-
sah Hospital for treatment.
She recently made arrange-
ments for a patient from
Syria who was encouraged
to come here by Syrian doc-
tors and the hospital is
awaiting his arrival.
