Center Marks 28th Israel Anniversary

The Jewish Community
Center will begin its sched-
ule of activities celebrating
Israel Independence Day
9:30 p.m. Saturday in Shiff-
man Hall with a program
featuring "Chocolate, Mint
and Mastik," an Israel song
and comedy trio. There is an
admission charge:
Sunday's activities will
begin with a walkathon for
Soviet Jewry at 1 p.m. in the
Cong. Bnai Moshe parking
lot, sponsored by the De-
troit Committee for Soviet
Jewry. Also beginning at 2
are a story hour for pre-
schoolers and an Israel
birthday .party for children

Walkathon Due
for Soviet Jews

The Detroit committee
for Soviet Jewry will hold a
walkathon and rally to ex-
press solidarity for op-
pressed Russian Jews 1 p.m :
Sunday in the Cong. Bnai
Moshe parking lot, as part
of the Israel Independence
Week activities sponsored
by the Jewish Community
Center.
The walkathon will con-
clude with a 3 p.m. rally at
the synagogue at which
Jeannette Mager, wife of
Soviet prisoner of consci-
ence Mikhail Mager, will
make an appeal.

second grade. The party will
be held in the Center nur-
sery.
The Israeli film, "The
Big Dig," will be shown in
the Aaron DeRoy Studio
Theatre at 2.30 and 4:30
p.m. Sunday. There is an
admission charge. The
preliminaries for the El Al
airplane contest will be
held 4' p.m. Sunday in the
game room. The Center
Symphony will perform in
concert at 7:30 p.m. in
Shiffman Hall. Admission.
Monday's activities in-
clude the showing of "The
Big Dig" at 1:30 and 8 p.m.
in the studio theater. Ad-
mission.
A memorial service, spon-
sored by the Center Hebrew
Department, for those who
fell in Israel's war for inde-
pendence, will take place
7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the
studio theater. The film,
"After the War," will be
shown.
Wednesday's schedule in-
cludes three showings of
"The Big Dig" at 1:30, 5 and
8 p.m. in the studio theater.
Admission.
Two programs are
scheduled for Thursday.
"The Big Dig" will be
shown at a nominal charge
1:30 p.m. in the studio
theater. At 8 p.m. the Jew-
ish Community Council
will present a program,

"How the News Media
Views Israel," with Mar ,
tin Hayden, vice president
and editor of the Detroit
News, and Steve Cohen,
executive producer-news,
WXYZ-TV. The program
will be held in the studio
theater.
A rikudia and zimriya
festival will highlight the
May 8 activities. Beginning
at 9:30 p.m., the Center will
be the scene for Israeli danc-
ing, singing and refresh-
ments, all in Shiffman Hall,
sponsored by the Center
Group Services and Hebrew

Reform Social Action Institute
to Be Led by Washington Rabbi

The Metropolitan Detroit
Federation of Reform Syn-
agogues will present its an-
nual Social Action Institute
beginning with coffee 1:30
p.m. Saturday at Temple
Emanu-El.
The program is entitled
"Christian and Jew in
America; In Tension and In
Alliance," and will be con-
ducted by Rabbi David Sap-
; erstein, associate director of
the Religious Action Center,
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, in Washing-
ton.
Rabbi Saperstein was
particularly active in the
civil rights struggle, the an-
ti-war movement and in
prison reform and housing.

Through the Israel Inde-
pendence Week observance
the exhibit, "My Shalom,
My Peace," a collection of
paintings and poems by
Jewish and Arab children,
