13th Century Medical Texts
Uncovered at Jewish Seminary

NEW YORK — Two He-
brew copies of an historical,

medical-botanical text
which standardized drug
names and provided new
warnings against drug adul-
teration to 13th Century
doctors and chemists have
been uncovered at the li-
brary of the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary in New
York.
Dr. Menahem Schmelzer,
Seminary librarian, notes
that many historical scien-
tific works are available in
Hebrew, and that access to
them is limited by the rela-
tively uncommon incidence
of Hebrew knowledge by
scientists. The manuscript
was located by Dr. Alexan-
der Tobias.
The New York Botanical
Gardens recently an-
nounced the acquisition of
two rare manuscripts of
"Circa Instans" (About the
Present), the historic Latin
text.
According to the 19th
Century bibliographer
Moritz Steinschneider, the
Hebrew versions of this
landmark text were more

complete in their duplica-
tion of the original than
Latin manuscripts still
available. Dr. Schmelzer
said the Seminary's two
texts may be the only He-
brew ones available in the
world.
One was transcribed ar-
ound 1250, about half a cen-
tury after the Botanical
Gardens' manuscripts, be-
lieved to be the oldest Latin
copies. The second, a con-
densed version entitled
"Sefer Ha-Ezer" (Book of
Help), was transcribed in
the 1500's.
"Circa Instans" is funda-
mental in the development
of modern botany. It was
the first major new work of
pharmacology in the post-
classical world, incorporat-
ing both the problems and
knowledge acquired in the
early Middle Ages from a
variety of national influ-
ences.
The work was written
around 1150 by Matthaeus
Platearius, a noted teacher
at the School of Salerno, It-
aly, the first school of medi-
cine in Europe.

HIAS Investigates Situation
of Jews in South America

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Carl Glick, HIAS president,
and Gaynor I. Jacobson,
executive vice president,
have just returned from a
fact-finding mission to ma-
jor Jewish communities in
Argentina, Chile, Brazil and
Uruguay.
According to Glick, a ma-
jor concern of HIAS was the
well-being of 500,000 Argen-
tinian Jews. Under the Per-
onist government, the coun-
try had suffered from
political turmoil, social un-
rest and heavy inflation
pressures.
The HIAS group arrived
in Buenos Aires simulta-
neously with the revolution-
ary takeover by a military
government. In support of
the new regime, the Jewish
community participates in
the rebuilding of the coun-

try and hopes for an end to
instability and urban terror.

The Jewish communi-
ties of Santiago, Chile and
Montevideo, Uruguay are
primarily middle class and
have suffered serious eco-
nomic distress as a result
of rampant inflation. The
great majority of Jews in
Chile and Uruguay sup-
port the present military
governments.

They observed that Brazil
afforded its citizens the
largest measure of freedom
of those nations visited. This
was strikingly indicated
when a delegation of Brazil-
ian Jewish leaders were en-
couraged to visit with Presi-
dent Ernesto Geisel to
express concern about Bra-
zil's anti-Zionist vote in the
UN in November 1975.

grees at the convocation
