Diamant, a plasma physi- cist and his wife Galia, an electronics technician, came to Israel in 1972 from the Soviet science center of No- vosibirsk and settled in Re- hovot where he embarked on plasma physics research at the institute, before leaving to join the settlement group. The other three families in the group share similar backgrounds and intensive experience in science. To- gether with several other settlement experiments now under way in the north, they see themselves as part of the effort to de- velop an industrial scien- tific complex on the Golan Heights. The immigrant scientists are committed to creating a cooperative economy along the lines of the moshav shi- tufi (a settlement in which families live in individual homes but share their work and incomes), and to set- tling on the land in underde- veloped areas — a life style that suits them and serves Israel as well. The group lives in trailers on a temporary site over- looking Lake Kinneret, while their workshops and laboratory occupy make- shift quarters in a converted garage. Six other families are already waiting to join them as soon as living quarters permit, and many more have expressed inter- est. Also interested are more than 50 of Israel's top re- searchers who have visited the science settlement, of- ten spending the night on the lawn or on the floor, to attend the five scientific seminars that the group has held in recent months. These sessions are a continuation of the famous seminars held in the Soviet Union by Jew- ish dissident scientists dis- missed from their posts. A recent lecturer was famed Soviet physcist, Alexander Voronel, who now lives in Israel. In the first year of its ex- istence the group has al- ready worked on 13 prelimi- nary projects, two of which are now covered by research contracts. Since their capa- bilities are varied, their re- search ranges from solar en- GEORGE OHRENSTEIN JEWELERS, Ltd. ergy to custom-made electronics, electro optics and lasers. Deputy news secretary John Carlson, when asked whether a meeting was being considered, replied: "The President has always expressed an interest in meeting with representa- tives of the parties to the Arab-Israeli conflict, but there are no specific plans at this time." Carlson made the com- ment after being asked about a report from Israeli sources that Assad is will- ing to meet with Ford be- fore the end of May when the mandate for the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force on the Golan Heights is due to expire LINCOLN CENTER GREENFIELD AT 10 1/2 MILE ALSO EASTLAND CENTER, LIVONIA MALL, BRIGHTON MALL AND MACOMB MALL AND SOON, CANTON CENTER.
