Supreme Court
Refuses to Hear
JIM. Wiretap Suit
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Supreme Court refused
to hear a suit brought by
members of the Jewish De-
fense League asking for
damages from government
officials who conducted an
"illegal" wiretap aganst
them in 1970 and 1971.
The High Court let stand
a decision by a United
States Court of Appeals in
the District of Columbia
that suggested that officials
may escape paying daMages
if they could demonstrate
that they had sincerely be-
lieved the wiretap to be
proper.

The JDL suit was against
former Attorney General
John Mitchell and nine pre-
sent or former members of
the FBI. During a trial
against 13 JDL members for
gun conspiracy in June
1970, the government re-
vealed it had wiretapped
converstaions of 10 of the
defendants without a war-
rant.

The District of Columbia
Court of Appeals ruled that
the wiretaps were illegal
since the government may
use wiretaps without war-
rants only if the evidence
that the target of the wire-
tap was a foreign agent or a
collaborator with a foreign
agent.

Bella Abzug Hits U.S. Sales
NOW OPEN
MAZER'S SHOES
of Arms to Arab Nations
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Noting that the U.S. has
sold more than $12 billion in
military weapons and
equipment to Saudi Arabia,
Iran and other Persian Gulf
oil states in the past three
years, Congresswoman
Bella S. Abzug (D-NY)
called for a halt to such
sales as a way of strength-
ening the chances for peace
in the Middle East.
In a speech to an Overseas
Press Club, Mrs. Abzug also
criticized the Ford Adminis-
tration's "long-range plan to
sell arms to Egypt."
"Congress has gone along
with the U.S. sale of six C-
130 military transport
planes to Egypt after win-
ning a commitment from
Secretary Kissinger that the
U.S. will not supply Egypt
with any more military
equipment this year," she
said.
"But I think it is becom-
ing increasingly clear that
if President Ford were to
be reelected, he would be
back next year with re-
quests for military aid to
Egypt. ,,
According to the Detroit
Free Washington Bureau,
Under Secretary of State
Joseph Sisco told Israeli
Ambassador Simcha Dinitz
about the U.S. sale several
weeks before it was made
public.
Dinitz also was told that
the U.S. has a four-stage
plan, expected to be exe-
cuted over a period of years;
the C130s, as an initial
breakthrough; non-lethal
weapons, such as trucks or
jeeps; defensive weapons;
and a full-scale supply rela-
tionship.
