THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 36 April 30, 1976 Economic Gains Ford Says He Won't Send U.S. Troops Into Lebanon WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Ford has ruled out any possibility of send- ing American forces into Lebanon or in the Middle East as part of a UN peace- keeping force. Speaking in a television interview at Butler Univer- sity in Indiana, he said "I don't think the United States should participate in a peacekeeping force in the Middle East. The minute you do that, you get the Russians in and I don't think you should have the United States or the Rus- sians there." Meanwhile, Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger said he does not believe that there is "any immediate Soviet threat" of interven- tion in the conflict in Leba- non. But, he said, there is the "danger" if the conflict spreads outside Lebanon "that outside powers may be drawn in as in other Middle East confrontations."
