Ford Says He Won't Send U.S. Troops Into Lebanon

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
President Ford has ruled
out any possibility of send-
ing American forces into
Lebanon or in the Middle
East as part of a UN peace-
keeping force.
Speaking in a television

interview at Butler Univer-
sity in Indiana, he said "I
don't think the United
States should participate in
a peacekeeping force in the
Middle East. The minute
you do that, you get the
Russians in and I don't
think you should have the
United States or the Rus-
sians there."
Meanwhile, Secretary of
State Henry A. Kissinger
said he does not believe that
there is "any immediate
Soviet threat" of interven-
tion in the conflict in Leba-
non. But, he said, there is
the "danger" if the conflict
spreads outside Lebanon
"that outside powers may be
drawn in as in other Middle
East confrontations."
In Tel Aviv, Israel de-
nied an Arab report that
naval units shelled refugee
camps in Lebanon and

banese Maronite Christian
woman in labor crossed into
Israel recently during the
turmoil in her native coun-
try and had her child in the
Rebecca Sieff Government
Hospital in Safed.
Accompanied by her hus-
band and a woman, Mar-
yam Ranik was met at the
border by an Israeli army
unit who whisked her to the
hospital. Mother and son

zhak Rabin met with Sen.
Charles Mathias of (R-Md.),
a member of the Senate
Appropriations Committee.

Israel's needs for 1977 and

viding Israel with the funds
and expected "some action
on this."

Seymour Graubard, chair-
man of the Anti-Defama-
tion League of Bnai Brith,
stressed the importance of
Jewish organizations sched-
uling a maximum number
of their regular meetings in
Israel to help the hardhit Is-
raeli economy and to ex-
press solidarity with the
Israeli people.
He made the statement in
announcing that the ADL's
national commission had
scheduled for the first time
part of its 63rd annual
