recently by Dr. Joseph
Kedem, senior lecturer in
physiology at Bar-Ilan, Is-
rael's only religious oriented
university, located outside
of Tel Aviv.
Dr. Kedem, formerly Jo-
seph Krupnick of Chicago,
says that it is possible to
measure the degree of stress
which a heart is undergoing
or can tolerate by measur-
ing the proportions of glu-
cose and fatty acids which it
consumes through its blood
circulation.
He used this yardstick
successfully at Bar-Ilan in
laboratory tests on dogs,
an animal whose physiol-
ogical reactions have gen-
erally proved very similar
to humans.
Dr. Kedem discovered
that a 50-50 balance be-

Soviet Pilots Get
Low Evaluation

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
raeli fighter pilots gained a
low opinion of the profes-
sional competence of their
Soviet counterparts, at least
as of six years ago, when
outnumbered Israeli jets
downed five Soviet MIG-21s
in a dogfight over the Gulf
of Suez during the height of
the war of attrition with
Egypt. They found the Rus-
sians poorly trained and
clumsy in combat.
The first report of the
encounter, by one of the Is-
raeli pilots who participated
in it, was published in the
Air Force magazine. His
opinions were shared by
other Israeli pilots and sen-
ior Air Force officers.

ZOA Will Hold
Confab in Israel

NEW YORK — The 80th
national convention of the
Zionist Organization of
America will take place July
6-13 in Israel.
Leon Ilutovich, national
executive director of the
ZOA, noted that the official
opening of the convention
would take place in the 3,-
000 seat, Convention Center
in Jerusalem.
Highlights-of the conven-
tion, according to Ilutovich,
will include a public session
in Mann- Auditorium in Tel
Aviv, an artistic evening in
the open-air Roman Theater
at Caesarea, and a day at
the ZOA Kfar Silver Cam-
pus near Ashkelon.

Iraqi Authorities'
Refuse to Release
Aaronson's Body

AMSTERDAM (JTA) —
The Iraqi authorities have
refused to hand over the
body of Alexander Aaron-
son, the Dutch Jew executed
last December, or even to let
his mother see his remains.
Mrs. Aaronson has re-
turned to Holland from a
two-week stay in Baghdad
where she tried to obtain
permission to bring her
son's remains to Amster-
dam for burial.
She was not allowed to
see either the body or any of
her son's personal belong-
ings and was given only
three rings, including his
wedding ring, which he
wore at the time of his exe-
cution.

tween the consumption of
glucose and fatty acids by
the heart shows a generally
healthy heart which can
stand normal stress.
The heart's well-being
and tolerance to stress,
however, declines in propor-
tion to the increase in its
consumption of fatty acids
as compared with glucose.
The proportion is deter-
mined by analyzing the
blood's content before it en-
ters the heart and after
leaving it. This can be mea-
sured in humans by several
methods none of which re-
quires surgery.
The most immediate ap-
plication of this discovery,
and the primary reason Dr.
Kedem began his experi-
ments, is to improve treat:
ment for congestive heart
failure, a disease that gener-
ally occurs while the patient
is recovering from a heart
attack.

JPS Honors
Author, Scholar

NEW YORK — Dr. Solo-
mon Grayzel, noted Jewish
scholar and author, -was
honored on the occasion of
his 80th birthday at a lunch-
eon held in Philadelphia by
the Jewish Publication So-
ciety of America.
Dr. Grayzel, editor emeri-
tus of JPS and a member of
the society's publication
committee, served as JPS
editor from 1939 to 1966,
following a career in teach-
ing and the rabbinate. Dur-
ing that time JPS published
Grayzel's "History of the
Jews" and "A History of the
Contemporary Jews," which
are still widely used texts
throughout the English-
speaking world.
Foremost among his edi-
torial achievements was the
initiation of a modern tran-
slation of the Hebrew Bible
and the publication of the
new JPS translation of "The
Torah," prepared by a com-
mittee of world-famous
Jewish scholars, in 1962.
This same committee, origi-
nally assembled by Dr.
Grayzel, is currently com-
pleting a new translation of
"The Prophets" to be pub-
lished by JPS in 1977.
