Community's Traditional Generosity Marked
With 1976 AJCampaign Total of $16,630,000

(Continued from Page 1)
Also recognized were pre-
Campaign chairmen Marvin
Goodman, Jay Kogan, Jack
Robinson and Norman
Wachter; Campaign vice
chairmen Paul Borman,
Avern Cohen, David Han-
dleman, Edward Levy,
David Mondry, I. William
Sherr, Abraham Shiffman
and Alfred Taubman, as
well as 1975 chairman Rich-
ard Sloan and Arthur How-
ard and the Jewish Welfare
Federation leadership.
Detroiter Paul Zucker-
man, president of the
United Jewish Appeal, was
introduced to the audience
and joined Dr. Fill, Harris
and other speakers in laud-
ing William Avrunin, who is
retiring from his post as
executive vice president of
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion after 13 years in the
position.
Dr. William Haber of the
University of Michigan, who
stepped down last year after
25 years as president of the
World ORT Union, substi-
tuted as speaker for the eve-
ning for ailing journalist
Max Lerner.
Dr. Haber described the
history of world Jewry
during the past 35 years as
the passing of several life-
times marked by the - hor-
rors of Hitler, Israel's re-
birth and the war of 1948,
and the wars of 1956, 1967
and 1973. He stated that
each lifetime marked a
threat to the prestige, the
well-being, the security of
Jewish communities
throughout the world.
He said peace in the Mid-
dle East has nothing to do
with occupied territories or
concern over borders.
"Peace is related to one is-
sue," he said. "Do the Arab
nations accept the existence
of a free, sovereign state of
Israel?"
Dr. Haber added, "The
issue is not whether there
will be a state of Palestine,
but whether there will be a
state of Israel."
He told the audience he

rael, and said a strong, re-
sponsible, mature American
Jewish community as evi-
denced by Detroit is neces-
sary for a strong Israel and
as a protection against fu-
ture holocausts.
At the conclusion of the
meeting Avrunin an-
nounced that the 1976 De-
troit Allied Jewish Cam-

paign-Israel Emergency
Fund had in hand $15,-
289,000. Based on past ex-
perience and the number
of past donors still to be
contacted, he estimated
that the 1976 Campaign
total would reach $16,-
630,000. The 1975 Cam-
paign reached the $17 mil-
lion mark.

Avrunin said the 1976
Campaign marked the
eighth consecutive year of
double-digit giving for Met-
ropolitan Detroit. He said
the area ranked 11th in Jew-
ish population in the United
States, but that the 1976
total will maintain the
area's position as the fourth
largest Campaign.
