Dr. I. Silvarman

Dr. Israel Z. Silvarman, a
physician for more than 50
years, died April 15 at age
75.
Born in Russia, Dr. Sil-
varman lived 70 years in De-
troit. He was the founder of
North Detroit General Hos-
pital in the early 1940s.
After retiring in 1974 from
his medical practice, Dr. Sil-
varman returned to the hos-
pital as its coordinator. He
was a member of Perfection
Lodge of the Masons and the
Phi Lambda Kappa Medical
Fraternity, Wayne County
and Michigan State Medical
Societies and Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
During World War II, Dr.
Silvarman earned a com-
mendation from the Presi-
dent "for his service to the
Selective Service Board as a
medical adviser."
Dr. Silvarman leaves his
wife, Janice; three sons, B.
Lionel; Jerome J. and Allen
B.I.; a brother, Hyman Sil-
verman; a sister, Mrs. Jo-
seph (Anna) Spiegelman;
and six-grandchildren.

Benjamin Blumberg, a

gah Lodge of Bnai Brith.
He leaves his wife, Caro-

brothers, Dr. Alan of Holly-
wood, Calif., and David of
Santa Monica; six sisters,
Mrs. Martin (Sadie) Brown
of New York, Mrs. William
(Jean) Klafer, Mrs. Gus
(Mary) Jacobs, Mrs. Jack
(Dorothy) Rubin, Mrs. Irv-
ing (Faye) Saffer and Mrs.
Arthur (Esther) Brown; and
one grandson.

Philip B. Frank, 69

Philip B. Frank, a certi-
fied public accountant with
offices in Huntington
Woods, died April 15 at age
69.
Born in New York City,
Mr. Frank lived 50 years in
Detroit. He was graduated
from the University of
Michigan in 1928. Mr. Frank
was a member of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek and a life
member of the Michigan As-
sociation of Certified Public
Accountants. He resided at
885 North Woodward, Bir-
mingham.
He leaves his wife, Es-
ther; a son, Elliot; a daugh-
ter, Sarah of New York
City; and a brother, Harry.

Soma Morgenstern, the Pol-
ish-born novelist whose
work, "The Third Pillar,"
was adapted for part of the
Yom Kippur Mahzor in the
prayer book of Conservative
Judaism, died April 17 at
age 85.

Edith Wigder, 65

Edith Wigder, a retired
teacher who was active in
efforts for the retarded,
died April 14 at age 65.
Born in Chicago, Mrs.
Wigder was a former mem-
ber of the board of the De-
troit Association for Re-
tarded Children, a member
of the board of the Center
for Community Living for
the Retarded Citizens of
Wayne County and a board
member of the Michigan As-
sociation for Emotionally
Disturbed Citizens. She was -
a member of Temple Israel.
Mrs. Wigder leaves her
husband, Benjamin; a son,
William; and her step-
mother, Mrs. Ethel Muskin
of Los Angeles, Calif.

Mr. Morgenstern was best
known for a trilogy trans-
lated from the German and
published here in 1947, 1948
and 1950: "The Son of the
Lost Son," "In My Father's
Pastures," and "The Testa-
ment of the Lost Son."

His books generally re-
flected the pastoral life of
village and farm that once
existed in Eastern Europe.
Referring to the adoption of
a passage from his work for
the Mahzor, Mr. Morgen-
stern said it meant more to
him than if he had won a
Nobel Prize.
