The Pope: An Enigma or a Bias?

When Pope Paul VI visited Israel several
years ago and was given a royal reception by the
then President Schneur Zalman Shazar, he did
not mention Israel by name even once. Since
then there have been many conflicting reports
from the Vatican about the Papal attitudes on
Jerusalem. Never once did the Pope express con-
cern over the man_y acts of terrorism against
Jews in the Holy Land. All-too-frequently he
made it a point to talk about the Palestinians,
with implications that there were injustices
stemming from Israelism.
No one begrudges the president of Egypt,
Anwar el Sadat, the glamorous acclaim he re-
ceived at the hands of Pope Paul during a one-

hour visit by the Cairean in Italy. But the news
media called attention to the coolness with
which a Jerusalemite, Golda Meir, was received
at the Vatican during a much shorter interview.
And there was no hiding the facts that the
Pope's concern was with Palestinians and a
veiled reference to his antagonistic attitude on
the Jewish administration of the Holy City of
Jerusalem.
Is the Pope an enigma? Or, is he a carrier of
bias? His actions certainly do not denote friend-
ship for and fairness to Israel.
Aren't there concerned Catholics to express
resentment over such partisanship?

'Lest We Forget' Accuses
Ukrainians in the Holocaust

More than 30 years following the end of World War II charges
continue to be levelled that European governments have failed to pro-
secute Nazi war criminals in their midst.
Added to considerable documentation held in national archives
around the world, and the vast research of Simon Wiesenthal's docu-
mentation center in Vienna, is a new work published by a Ukrainian
now living in New York.
In the author's own words:
- "Lest We Forget," edited and published by Michael Han-
usiak, exposes the part played by many leaders. of the Organi-
zation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) in the extermination.
of thousands of Jews along with other nationals during the .
period of occupation of the Ukraine, Poland and other eastern
territories.
"Lest We Forget" names names, and presents documen-
tation of the Hitlerite collaborators who today have found a
haven in the United States, France, West Germany and other
countries. Some of them are still active in the leadership of
OUN organizations in their communities, posing as innocent
defenders of democracy while their past is one of murder and
torture of the Jews and many Ukrainian and Polish anti-Nazis
and freedom fighters.
"Lest We Forget" reprints 49 facsimilies of documents in-

volving some of the OUN leaders in mass-murders, jailings
and persecution of Jews. They represent themselves a power-
ful indictment of these Ukrainian nationalists. The book also
shows that the Ukrainian fascists were not even to be outdone
by the German Nazis when it came .to anti-Semitic slander,
hate propaganda and programs.
Hanusiak's 188-page volume does not quite live up to its promise
of identifying war criminals now living throughout the world. Instead,
it documents atrocities with the testimony of witnesses, photographs
and war-time police records to show the actions of Ukrainian officials
and citizens in aiding the Nazis' "Final Solution." In this way Hanu-
siak hopes to expose the guilty individuals wherever they may live.
As an historical reference, "Lest We Forget" is a chilling record
of official brutality and bestiality. From the slaughter of prisoners to
the brief, official police reports of use of firearms in dealing with
Jews, Hanusiak paints the oft-told, but forever grim picture of official
slaughter of a .people.
Page after page of police reports, in Ukrainian and translated into
English, documenls Hanusiak's charges of official Ukrainian partici-
pation and zest for copying the Nazis' "efficiency" in dealing with
Jews.
An example, just one of many presented, is the following report
of a Ukrainian police officer to the Commissiariat of the Ukrainian
police:
I report that on Aug. 21, 1942 there were 312 Jews
ered to the Yanivsky Camp. There were four instances of use
of firearms, using 13 cartridges. Nine Jews were killed by the
German Police.
There were attempts at bribes. Later these articles were
turned over to. the Security Police. They included three gold
chains, one string of pearls and 6,650 gold coins..
Photographs of uniformed Germans and Ukrainians rounding up
Jews, photographs of torture and executions, and detailed accounts of
official Ukrainian duplicity with the Nazis far outweigh the draw-
backs of a sometimes poorly written text.
A valuable addition to the Holocaust literature, "Lest. We Forget"
amply fulfills its title.
