Curtis to Get Jewish Seminary
Solomon Schechter Award
Theodore M. Curtis, com-
munal leader, will receive
the Solomon Schechter
Medal from The Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America at a community-
wide brunch 11 a.m. May 16
in the Franklin home of
Merrill Gordon.
The Solomon Schechter
Medal is presented to per-
sons whose consecrated ef-
forts on behalf of The Jew-
ish Theological Seminary
stand in the high tradition
of the scholar, thinker,
teacher, rabbi and leader
who served from 1901 to
1915 as the seminary's sec-
ond president.
Born in Budapest, Curtis
came to the United States in
1919, settling in Akron,
Ohio until 1922, when he
moved to Detroit. After
graduating in 1927 from
Cass Technical High School,
he enrolled in the University
of Detroit and later received
a Bachelor of Science degree
in mechanical engineering
from The Detroit Institute
of Technology.
A member of the Engi-
neering Society of Detroit,
Curtis has been in busi-
ness 37 years. Curtis is a
member of Cong. Bnai
Moshe, a past president of
Bnai Moshe and its men's
club. He has been active in
the National Federation of
Jewish Men's Clubs and in
the United Hebrew
Schools of Detroit. He has
served on The Jewish
Theological Seminary's
Greater Detroit Commit-
tee formore than 25 years.
His other communal en-
deavors include the Ameri-
can Society for Technion,
Bnai Brith, Jewish Welfare
Federation and the Zionist
Organization of America. In
the early 1950's he was ap-
pointed by the mayor of
Detroit to serve on the De-
troit Olympic Committee.
He also is a member of the
Masonic Order, Perfection
Jewish Causes
Aided by Doctor
The Jewish News has
learned that the late Dr.
Samuel J. Eder, who died
March 2, has made several
substantial contributions to
Israeli and local Jewish
causes.
According to Charles
Rubiner, attorney for Dr.
Eder's estate, the benefici-
aries include the Jewish
Home for the Aged, the Is-
rael Emergency Fund,
Camp Tamarcak, the United
Hebrew Schools, the Pen-
rickton Center for handi-
capped children and a Bnai
Brith children's home in
Jerusalem.
Dr. Eder was a prominent
Detroit physician who was
active at Cong. Shaarey Ze-
dek, and was a board mem-
ber at the Home for the
Aged and past master of
Perfection Lodge of the
Masons.
