- Varied Programs to Mark Center Israel Independence Observance
The annual Israel Inde-
pendence Week celebration
at the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan De-
troit will take place May 1-9,
at the Center's new main
building complex. This
year's celebration marks the
28th anniversary of the
state of Israel.

A full calendar of events
has been planned for each
day, with all activities open
to the public. Some events
carry a nominal charge.
A highlight of this year's
celebration will be the open-
ing night appearance of
"Chocolate, Mint and Mas-
tik," an Israeli singing,
dancing and acting trio, 9:30
p.m. May 1 in Shiffman
Hall. Tickets are now on
sale.
Another feature will be
the week-long exhibit of
"My Shalom — My
Peace," a collection of
paintings and poems by
Jewish and Arab children
living in Israel.
The Center Symphony
Orthodox to Honor Israel's Birthday
The Metropolitan Council
of Young Israel together
with the Religious Zionists
of Detroit will join for the
observance of Yom Hazika-
ron (Day of Remembrance)
and Yom Ha' Atzmaut (Is-
rael Independence Day) 6:30
p.m. May 4 at Young Israel
of Oak-Woods.
The service will follow the
order designated by the -
Chief Rabbinate of Israel
and recited in Israeli syn-
agogues.
Following the service, a
holiday seuda will take
place in Stollman Hall.
Chairman of this event is
Frank Leiderman.
Entertainment will be
provided by Abraham Ben-
Zeev and Sunny Segal.
The services are open to
the public, but reservations
are required for dinner. FOr

(Dorothy) Shaye, active in
communal and charitable
causes, have been named the
Jewish National Fund hono-
rees for 1976.
Announcing the selec-
tions as a mark of recogni-
tion of the couple's many
years' contributions to Jew-
ish communal activities and
causes, Mark E. Schlussel,
president of the JNF Coun-
cil of Greater Detroit,
stated that the annual din-
ner at which the Shayes will
be honored will be held June
16 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Shaye was the 1971 gen-
eral chairman of the Allied
Jewish Campaign-Israel
Emergency Fund and has
served as president of the
Jewish Family Service. He
has been president of the
Franklin Hills Country Club
and of The - Detroit Food
Council. He is on the board
of trustees of Shaarey Ze-
dek.

place 8 p.m. May 6, co-spon-
sored by the Jewish Com-
munity Council.
Other Independence
Week activities include the
Israeli film "The Big
Dig," a comedy by
Ephraim Kishon, shown at
various times throughout
the week; children's story
hours, rikudia and zim-
riya, dancing and singing
festival; and a closing
dance sponsored by the
Michigan Jewish Young
Adult Council.
A memorial service for

those who fell in the Wars
of Independence will take
place 7:30 p.m. May 4 in the
Aaron DeRoy Studio Thea-
ter, and it will include a doc-
umentary film titled "After
the War." This event is open
to the public without
charge.

A discussion of "How the
MAX SHAYE
Shaye began his career
as an artist about 20 years
ago. Nearly 2,000 of his
paintings have found their
way into public and pri-
vate collections all over e a:
the world, and aboUt 600 of
his paintings have been
donated to hospitals and -
institutions in this area.
Dorothy Shaye comes of a
Zionist-oriented family and
is a longtime member of
most Jewish- women's or-
ganizations in the commu-
nity.
The dinner committee is
