THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS April 16, 1976 39 Passover Link to Bicentennial: Israelis Invent Metal Analysis Moses Flight, Paul Revere Ride By DAVID SCHWARTZ (Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.) Passover is the Jewish birth of freedom. The cele- bration of the American Bicentennial of American freedom serves to remind us of some interesting paral- lels. There is, for instance, the midnight ride of Paul Rev- ere. What American does not know of that? In the case of Israel, we also have a midnight ride or journey, t in Israel's case, it was t of one man but of 0,000 people. The midnight exit of the Jewish people! That's why we eat matzot. The Passover liturgy has a great piece telling of the many wonder- ful things occurring at mid- night. Moses had gotten the consent of the Pharoah for the Israelites to leave, but he knew about politicians. They promise you one thing and a day later they do something else. He was taking no chances. We can imagine that many Jews said, "What's the hurry. Let's get a good night's rest, have a nice sup- per, watch television and in the morning, we'll get up, have a good breakfast and then we'll go. Besides, if we have a little time we can bet- ter prepare for the journey, make some pumpernickel bread. You know in the su- permarket in the desert, they don't sell pumper- nickel." Moses said, "There will be none of that. You do, of 0 Israel Denies Having Bomb, U.S. Attacks ► JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli officials have again denied that their country has nuclear bombs. They responded to a re- port in Time magazine that Israel has a stock of 13 local- ly-made nuclear bombs and considered using them dur- ing the 1973 Yom Kippur War. A U.S. Pentagon source said that if Israel does have such bombs they are very unreliable because Israel has never conducted nuclear tests. Israel also dismissed as "pure imagination" Time magazine's report that it ad once tried to shoot wn an American spy ane flying over Israeli nuclear arsenals in the esert. Similarly, a British au- hor's statement that the Israeli attack on the U.S. communications ship Lib- erty during the 1967 -Six- Day War was intentional was also called a fabrica- tion. The author could not substantiate his informa- tion during an appearance on the "Today" television show last week. HAIFA — A highly ac- curate determination of the amounts of various metallic elements in an alloy, pre- sented in a convenient color TV display, can now be ob- tained rapidly due to an in- strument invented by Israeli scientists. The first of its kind in the world, this apparatus is the result of a cooperative effort between researchers at the Israel Institute of Metals of the Technion-Israel Insti- tute of Technology and El- scint Ltd. Metallurgists have long been interested in knowing the exact composition of mixtures of metals (i.e. how much of which metal is lo- cated where, in a particular sample). This quantitative micro-analysis has a vital effect on the finished prod- uct's essential qualities such as mechanical properties, and heat and corrosion re- sistance. In the new instrument (called Periferal Display and Processing System for the Electron Probe Micro Analyzer) the colors shown on the TV display are proportional to the amounts of the various ele- ments comprising the sam- ple. This "technological sabra" is the result of a marriage between a com- monly used tool in the analysis of tiny sections of metallic, and other, mate- rials (called "Electron Probe Micro Analyzer") and a video display and processing unit which had been developed by Elscint. The versatility of this new system was recently demon- strated at the Opening of the International Conference on Applied Metallurgy, a joint U.S.-Israeli meeting organ- - Add 'n Tipp 342-7800 399-8333 Pisgah Lodge Youth Committee April 24th 7 p.m. Food & Refreshments $5.00 per person For Tickets Call 626-6374 Jerry 557-5480 Al YOU DO BETTER AT CHARLOTTE'S . . .
