Gutwirth and his wife Miram participated in the ceremony awarding 21 scholarships and research grants to outstanding Tech- nion undergraduate and graduate students, as well as one research fellowship, the first one to be granted. The Gutwirth Science Based Industires Center is being used as a "halfway house" for new industries using sophisticated technol- ogies which rent quarters from this Technion facility until they can establish themselves in a permanent location. Income from the rental is used for scholar- ships and grants to Tech- nion students, teachers and researchers. Doves Mark Start of Salute to Israel NEW YORK (JTA) — In a gesture of peace, scores of doves were released last week from the steps of Fed- eral Hall in the Wall Street district of Manhattan to herald the 12th annual Sa- lute to Israel Parade. The annual parade along Fifth Avenue from 57th Street to 86th Street is scheduled for June 13. This year's Salute to Is- rael Parade theme is . . . "Proclaim Liberty Through- out The Land . . ." as in- scribed on the Liberty Bell. Some 500,000 persons are expected to ,view and partici- pate in the event. The an- nual parade is sponsored by the American Zionist Youth Foundation in cooperation with more than 100 Jewish organizations and institu- tions. More than 50 floats and some 25 bands, and hundreds of marching con- tingents from Jewish and non-Jewish groups through- out the U.S. and Canada will participate. UN Zionism Rule Blasted by British LONDON (JTA) — The United Nations Gener- al Assembly's resolution equating Zionism with rac- ism was overwhelmingly condemned at the annual conference of the United Nations Association of Great Britain, held in Cam- bridge. The conference also urged the Palestine Liberation Organization to recognize Israel which, in turn, should accept PLO representation in peace negotiations. Israel Approves Cost-of-Living Hike TEL AVIV (JTA) — An agreement was signed be- tween Histadrut and the Coordinating Committee of Economic Organizations providing a 10.1 percent in- crease in the cost-of-living allowance, retroactive to April 1. The committee represents all employers in Israel. The maximum COL allowance will be IL 404 per month, subject to income tax.
