THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Message from the Rabbis of Detroit
The problem-plagued people of Israel are suffering under
the burdens of the world's highest tax rate and inflation
which has caused the prices of basic necessities to sky
rocket. They face shortages in almost every area of everyday
need: housing, day-care centers, homes for the elderly, edu-
cational and vocational programs to close the widening so-
cial and economic gap between the several cultures that
make up Israel's society.
Confronted as they are with the grim and costly business of
ensuring their physical survival, they have little left for any-
thing else. They must depend on world Jewry for help in
meeting the very humanitarian needs of caring for the
young, the old, the sick, the maimed and the newcomers.
Here in Detroit, fifteen percentof our Jewish community —
many of them elderly — live on incomes of less than $6,000 a
year, and their problems are manifold.
There are increasing numbers of single-parent families ask-
ing for counseling, material assistance, and a wide variety of
other-services.
Many more Soviet Jews will be coming to our community
this year and they must be housed, clothed, fed, and pro-
vided for until they become self-sufficient. There are others

who arrived during the past few years who, because of eco-
nomic conditions and the tight job market, are still depend-
ent on the Federation agencies for help.
Anti-Semitism was manifested in the passing of the United
Nations resolution equating Zionism with racism and in the
seating of the PLO delegation at the Security Council discus-
sions on the Middle East.
Therefore, we, the rabbis of Detroit, do hereby reaffirm:
"It is the obligation and privilege of every congregation to
cooperate to the fullest extent, and in every possible way,
with the 1976 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency
Fund in its drive which will help meet the needs of Jews in
Israel, in Detroit and throughout the world.
"We do further reaffirm that it is the privilege and obliga-
tion of every Jewish man and woman to give as generously
as possible to this Campaign which serves to support the
network of agencies here in Detroit every family may utilize
as they are needed.
We, Detroit's rabbis, ask that during this Passover season,
you search your heart and make a declaration of your Jew-
ishness by making your best possible contribution to the
1976 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund."
