McNichols "I - II Happy Passover MANHATTAN CONTAINER CORP. JTA, Inc.) A 24-page guide on condi- tions and problems for ob- servant Jews at 28 medical, dental and law schools in the United States has been prepared by two students at Yeshiva University, enti- tled, "Everything You Al- ways Wanted to Know About Religious Life in Medical, Dental and Law Schools — But Didn't Know Whom to Ask." The conclusion of the guide is that most campus problems affecting obser- vant Jewish students can be overcome but that there are aspects of social life "in the hinterlands" the observant prospective student needs to know beforehand. The guide was prepared by Steven Mandelbaum of Brooklyn, a 20-year-old pre- med and ,dental junior, and Jeffrey Strashun of Eliza- beth, N.J., a 21-year-old pre- law senior. Both are stu- dents at Yeshiva College. The guide was published by Hamevaser and the Com- mentator, Yeshiva student newspapers, and the Yesh- iva College Student Council. They said they started the guide in March 1974 by sending questionnaires to 90 alumni of Yeshiva CORRUGATED CARTONS University attending the 23823 Dequindre, Hazel Park 20 medical-dental and 15 566-8640 law schools "most applied to" by Yeshiva University Passover Greetings undergraduates. Some 60 percent of the question- naires were filled out and returned. 9130 JOS. CAMPAU HAMTRAMCK, MICH. He added that school officials there expect that "if you want to be a doctor, you have to take exams on Shabat." He said there were "sympathetic individual professors" but that they were hard to find. ASA BUILDERS SUPPLY CO. I Best wishes and greetings to all our friends and customers for a very Happy and Healthy Passover BEN & GEORGE'S DELICATESSEN Middlebelt & 7 Mile Rd., Livonia Students reported that at Johns Hopkins medical school "one can avoid going to school on Shabat if one so desires. There are abso- lutely no ill feelings about wearing a yarmulke in class and attitudes general are very understanding." Alumni found Yale medi- cal school had an "en- lightened attitude" toward missing classes and has a kosher kitchen, "a coopera- tive strictly kosher eating facility on campus." That kosher facility, like the one at Johns Hopkins, is a Young Israel project. At Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, the school was found to be "most accommo- dating with respect to res- cheduling exams that fall' on Shabat or Yom Toy" and within "10 minutes' drive, there is a substantial and active Jewish community." Alumni reported that Georgetown University law center "has been very coop- erative in the matter of ex- ams scheduled on the Sab- bath," and has rescheduled many for "religious observ- ance." Wearing a yarmulke to class presents no problem at Harvard law school. Wearing a yarmulke at For- dham University in the Bronx, a student reported, "makes the Orthodox stu- dent the focal point of after- class discussions, but pre- sents no religious prob- lems." Your- Host: Sammy Lerman 4710123 At Northwestern Univer- sity dental school in Chi- cago, conditions were gener- ally satisfactory except that participation in "religious social life" required a 20-minute hike to West Rog- ers Park, "a very nice `frum' neighborhood." St. Louis University gives all written examina- tions on Saturdays but re- examinations are sched- uled on Fridays, Sundays or Mondays. However, there are "no kosher res- taurants" in St. Louis. At Temple University dental school "probably the big- gest problem is that if you're not married, the social situation is terri- ble," a student reported. 624-7400 I Walled Lake, Mich. 28th Floor, Fisher Bldg., Detroit 48202 871-6700 Passover Greetings 1N-SINK-ERATOR Food Waste Disposer Manufacturing Co. 321 S.
