Kissinger Calls for Continued U.S. Cooperation with Israel

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Secretary of State Henry A.
Kissinger stressing the
"qualities, responsibilities
and hopes which tie Amer-
ica to Israel," pledged that
"the survival and security of
Israel are unequivocal and
permanent moral commit-
ments of the United States."
The Secretary also urged
Israel not to be suspicious of
the U.S. as both countries
strive for a Middle East
peace.

"The risks and obstacles
are many," Kissinger told
some 500 delegates to the
biennial convention of the
American Jewish Congress
at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel.
"Steps must be carefully
thought out and realistic."
Kissinger pledged that
"The United States will
help keep Israel strong —
to ensure that peace is
seen clearly to be the only
feasible course, we will
never abandon Israel —

`Argentina Coup

Won't Affect Jews

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
seizure of power by the mili-
tary junta in Argentina will
not have any special effect
on the Jewish community, it
was reported by an Argen-
tinan Jew who is close to the
political scene in Buenos
Aires. Because of the sensi-
tivity of his position he
asked not to be identified.
The Argentinian, who
was interviewed in New
York said: "There are no
indications that the junta
will adopt any special poli-
cies toward the Jews. It will
be no better and no worse
for the Jews than for the
general population. There is
no doubt that there are anti-
semitic elements in the
army and we must wait and
see how much of a role they
will be permitted to play. At
the moment the military
leaders are more concerned
with stabilizing the econ-
omy and re-establishing
political and economic mor-
ality as quickly as possible."
There was a slight in-
crease in emigration to Is-
rael in the final months of
President Peron's regime.
Even at that, he continued,
fewer than 1,500 Jews left
Argentina during 1975. He
believed establishment of
the junta would end the exo-
dus, as conditions stabi-
lized.

Won't Export
Arms Technology

U.S.

WASHINGTON (ZINS)
— Even if the Americans
were prepared to sell Israel
all the arms it requested,
the astronomical cost would
bankrupt the Jewish state.
Prof. Saadiah Amiel, who
heads the planning division
of Israel's Defense Ministry,
visited the United States to
explore the possibility of
acquiring the know-how to
manufacture military hard-
ware in Israel rather than to
purchase it from U.S. sup-
pliers. However, it appears
the U.S. is unwilling to ex-
port industrial secrets to
Israel and Amiel's mission

tive to the United Nations
Human Rights Commission,
who said that the anti-Zion-
ist resolution adopted by the
UN General Assembly last
year "played an instrumen-
tal role in stirring Arab pas-
sions and in inciting Arab
violence, not only on the
West Bank but in Israel it-
self."
He added: "Don't think
for one moment that conse-
quences of this at the time
were not calculated."
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy
(D-Mass.) told the conven-
tion "There must be no opt—

pipeline that will only Rik-
crease the risks of war."

Grove Marks Anniversary

A grove of 1,000 trees has
been planted in Israel in
honor of the 50th anniver-
sary of Mr. and Mrs. Louis
Jacobson, former Detroiters
of Sherman Oaks, Calif.
The Jacobsons were hon-
ored at a dinner-dance re-
cently by family and friends
on that occasion.
The party was given by
their children, Helen and
Cye Ekelman and Lenore
Jacobson; and two grand-
children.
Mr. Jacobson, a retired
real estate broker, has been
active in the Zionist Organi-
zation of America, Pisgah

The sedorim will be con-

The convention adopted
a resolution charging the
Ford Administration with
"breach of faith" for its
"turnabout" on what it
said was a promise to Is-
rael in exchange for "vital
concessions by Israel to
Egypt and Syria." The
resolution called on Con-
gress to appropriate the
full funding of foreign aid
as authorized for Israel,
including "the transi-
tional funding needed by
Israel to cover the three-
month period prior to the
start of the new fiscal
year."
The AJCongress also
voiced "grave concern" over
the shift in U.S. policy in
ending its arms embargo to
Egypt but said that it sup-
ports "the allocation of
funds for economic aid to
Egypt" since "we recognize
that the people of Egypt
continue to suffer the pain
of poverty and deprivation."
