The Sabbath before Pas-
sover is referred to as
"Shabat Hagadol," the
Great Sabbath.
There are a variety of rea-
sons offered for this termi-
nology. Some claim that it
was called by this name be-
cause the "great" personal-
ity of the synagogue (i.e.,
the rabbi) would speak on
this day. The idea was that
rabbis would not preach
except for two Sabbaths of
the year and this Sabbath
before the Passover was one
of them because the laws of
Passover were then ex-
plained to the congregation.
Others claim that this
Sabbath was considered
the "Great Sabbath" be-
cause during the Exodus

the 10 of the month, which
was a Sabbath that year.
Since the Egyptians con-
sidered the lamb to be holy
and did not object when the
Hebrews assigned lambs for
slaughter, it was considered
a "great" event which
marked the beginning of
independence for the for-
merly enslaved Hebrews.

Cooperative
Bicentennial
Program Set

Detroit's Jewish congre-
gations will sponsor a com-
munity Bicentennial com-
memoration of the part that
Jews and Judaism have
played in American history
and society, 8 p.m. April 19,
at Temple Emanu-El.
The program is the first
cooperative effort of the
Rabbinical Commission of
the Jewish Community
Council, the Synagogue
Council of Greater Detroit,
and the Cantorial Council of
Detroit.
Rabbi Daniel Jeremy
Silver of The Temple, of
Cleveland, will speak on
"What Lies Ahead: The
Jew in America — What
Was and What Is Yet To
Be." The event is open to
the public without charge.
Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum
of Temple Emanu-El, vice
president of the Rabbinical
Commission, said the pro-
gram is an important first
step in cooperative efforts of
clergymen and lay leaders
in the community.

Lubavitch to Offer
`shmura Matza

NEW YORK — More
than 100,000 Jewish homes
will be provided with
"matza shmura", hand
baked round matza, by the
Lubavitch Youth Organiza-
tion.
Matzot will also be pro-
vided to every college organ-
ization that will have Pas-
sover meals as well as to
American army installa-
tions at home and abroad,
jails and youth groups.
Members of the. Lubavitch
Youth Organization will
also visit hospitals and
health related facilities and
present the elderly and sick
with a package of shmura
matza.
