April 9, 1976 25 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ZOA Accepts Applications for Its Israel High School NEW YORK β€” Applica- tions for the 1976/77 aca- demic school year, at the Mollie Goodman Academic High School in Israel, are now being accepted, accord- ing to an announcement made by the Zionist Organi- zation of America depart- ment for high school educa- tion in Israel. The Mollie Goodman Aca- demic High School was es- tablished in 1967 and is op- erated under the supervision of the Israel Ministry of Education. In addition to the American curriculum and Jewish studies offered by the school there is extensive touring of the entire country. The school is located on the 520-acre Kfar Silver campus. There it shares the grounds with two Israeli high schools, the Kfar Silver Agricultural High School and the Kfar Silver Techni- cal High School. Meanwhile, a new Israel Summer Program for col- lege-age men and women will be inaugurated by the Zionist Organization of America Youth Department in order to acquaint more people with Israel's basic farming unit, the Moshay. The new program, accord- ing to Dr. Joseph P. Stern- stein, president of . the 120,000- member ZOA is seen as a first tentative step in the development of the ZOA as a vehicle for the immigration to Israel of Americans interested in set- tling on the land through the Moshav movement. The Moshav, a small hold- er's farming cooperative, balances the advantages of a private economy with the advantages of cooperative farming. For information on Summer in Moshav, write the ZOA Youth Depart- ment. A nationwide campaign to get American leaders to publicly identify withZion- ism by awarding them ZOA "Zionism buttons" has been an outstanding success, ac- cording to Leon Ilutovich, ZOA executive director. The campaign, part of 'a 300,000 button ZOA spon- sored distribution effort, has resulted in pinning the blue and white Zionist but- tons on hundreds of public figures, including Michi- gan's Gov. William Milliken. Principled America first: not merely in science, inventions, sky- scrapers, and highways, but in principles of conduct and depth of character. Best Wishes to All Our Friends and Patrons for a Happy, Healthy Passover COBO CLEANERS Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ruby and Family 18135 Livernois 863-0400 Historical Zionism Definition Dr. Elias Cooper, editor of the American Zionist, the literary monthly magazine published by the Zionist Organization of America, defines both the Israeli role as well as the Palestinian and Arab involvements in a 24-page brochure, "A Por- trait of a National Libera- tion Movement," published by the ZOA. In this pamphlet, which originally was the text of a long article in the American Zionist, Dr. Cooper, who is professor of modern history at the City University of New York, reviews the de- velopment of Zionism and the emergence of Israel and makes important comments on the Arab situation. With reference to the latter he states: "Modern Israel is the suc- cessor state, not of an Arab state, but of the previous Turkish and British rulers on 20 percent of the historic area of Palestine. The other 80 percent is Arab, but the Arabs insist on calling that part of it Jordan. "The exercise of sover- eign rights by the 'people of Palestine' is a two-way street. Jews are among the `people of Palestine.' Throughout the centuries of persecution in the Dias- pora, there was always a Jewish presence in Pales- tine. The city of Jerusalem had a Jewish majority in the 19th Century even be- fore the waves of modern Zionist immigration. "Palestine is a country straddling both banks of the Jordan River. The territory and population from the Jordan River to Iraq is 80 percent of Palestine. His- tory justifies Jewish sover- eignty over the remaining 20 percent of Palestine. "If any of the protagon- ists in the Middle East con- flict can be accused of rac- ism, it is the Arabs. There are 20 Arab countries in which AKabs can enjoy sov- ereign rights, but they would deny such rights to the Jewish people. They would even deny the exist- ence of a Jewish people by using the prevarication that their national movement is not supported by all Jews. "While it is true that some Jewish fringe ele- ments are anti-Zionist (ex- treme assimilationists who insist that Jews constitute only a religious community, and the extreme Orthodox who consider it sacrilege to bypass the Messiah's work by reestablishing a Jewish Devalued Pound JERUSALEM (ZINS) β€” The latest devaluation of the Israel pound is the 17th since the establishment of the Jewish, state. In 1948 the rate of exchange was US $1=IL 0.25. In 1949 it was IL 0.35 and in 1952 IL 0.72. By 1953 the rate of exchange had become US $1= IL 1.80; in 1962, IL 3.00; and in 1967, IL 3.50. By 1971 it was IL 4.20, falling in 1974 to IL 6. In the year 1975 there were three devaluations with the dollar rising from IL 6.00 to IL 7.10. In 1976 there have been four further devalua- tions to TL 7.52. state), Zionism and the af- firmation of Jewish people- hood represents the general will of the Jewish people the world over today. "Finally, the Zionists never used racial concepts in their struggle against the Arabs, but the extreme racist anti-Semitic 'Pro- tocols of the Elders of Zion' is a best-seller in the Arab world, and its formulations are used by the Arabs exactly as the Nazis used them. "The Arab war against Israel did not end in 1948. It was kept up by well-heeled guerrilla movements and brought to renewed full scale fighting with ever-in- creasing levels of force in 1956, 1967 and 1973. The opportunism of - the Soviet Union initially gave the Ar- abs the wherewithal for ag- gression. "It is currently assuming perilous dimensions due to the sudden wealth the Arab states have amassed as a result of their victimizing the industrial world by quadrupling the price of the oil. The Arabs can now buy not only weapons, but make their economic and political boycott of Israel more effec- tive by outright blackmail of governments and companies who are anxious for their business. "Only 'a determined, principled stand by the Western powers can pre- vent a demoralization of the world by Arab fanati- cism."
