This year, a substantial number will receive grants bearing the name of Aaron and Bertha Friedenwald Memorial Fund. These scholarship grants were made possible by a bequest to the fund from Dr. and Mrs. Jonas Frieden- wald, great-grandchildren of Aaron and Bertha. The Friedenwald Fund, admi,p- istered by PEF Israel En- dowment Funds, Inc., was established in 1923 by Dr. Harry Friedenwald of Balti- more, a founder of PEF. When referring to the Friedenwald family, histori- ans of the American Jewish community usually mean the father, son and grand- son triumvirate — Aaron, Harry and Jonas. Prodi- gious figure _ s of inexhausti- ble energy and diverse tal- ents, they shared careers as outstanding physicians, all specializing in ophthalmol- ogy (disease of the eye), each pursuing a broad range of intellectual and cultural interests and passionately devoted to' Zionism. Their lives and careers, a continuing pattern that formed an arch spanning three generations with Dr. Harry Friedenwald the keystone, covered a period of more than a century, from 1936 to 1955. Atlanta Federation Aids Meal Program ATALANTA, Ga. (JTA) — Kosher meals are being delivered to homes of shut- in elderly Jews in Atlanta in a program funded by the Atlanta Jewish Welfare Federation. The new service, cur- rently limited to 25 meals per day, is a collaborative service in which the Jewish Home prepares the dairy lunch for both regular and special diets. Federation of- ficials said volunteer driv- ers, recruited from Jewish .organizations, deliver the meals five days a week. Friedenwald. Aaron, in addition to his busy practice, was president of the Chizuk Emunah Con- gregation, which had been founded by his father, was active in the Liberal Party during the political hurly- burly that followed the Civil War, and continued his study and lectures in medi- cal history. Harry's interests went even further afield. No dab- bler, his study of medical history, with special refer- ence to the role of Jews as healers and scientists, pro- duced many essays includ- ing more than 40 which were included in a two-vol- ume work, "The Jews and Medicine," published in 1944 by the Johns Hopkins Press. He, too, became president of the Chizuk Emunah Congre- gation as well as the He- brew Education Society of Baltimore. The grandson, Aaron, has been referred to as a genius. How else does one speak of a medical scientist who is a talented painter, a serious mathematician and philoso- pher? A visiting lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1936, he sur- prised his audience by speaking extemporaneously in Hebrew. Zionism was the essen- tial theme in the lives of the three Friedenwalds. With his life-long friend, Henrietta Szold, Harry in 1893 joined Hevras Zion, possibly the first American Zionist organization. By 1904, he was elected presi- dent of the Federation of American Zionists. Throughout his many years as a Zionist, Harry ac- tively participated in the successive historic world meetings at Basel and was a Increased Penalty Sought for NY Synagogue Arson NEW YORK (JTA) — State Assemblyman Charles E. Shumer is press- ing for legislation that would drastically increase -the penalty for arson in houses of worship. "Right now if you burned a synagogue or a shack in a vacant lot you'd get the same penalty (up to two years in jail) and rarely do they prosecute," the Brook- lyn Democrat said during a visit to the burnt-out re- mains of Cong. Anshe Vilna on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The Orthodox synagogue, built 78 years ago, was de- stroyed by fire last Nov. 28. Shumer said it was one of 40 synagogues burned or oth- erwise vandalized in the area during the last two or three years. Shumer, who wants the maximum penalty for such acts increased to 15 years imprisonment, said his proposed legislation was supported by Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau and that he knew of no opponents so far. close associate of the verita- ble pantheon of thinkers and activists who gave birth to the Zionist movement and led it through its first stormy years. In 1924, he became a founding Council member of the Palestine Ec- onomic Corporation. Among Zionists and stu- dents of Israel's emergence as a sovereign nation there is general unanimity that Harry's chief contribution came during his tenure, fol- lowing the Balfour Decla tion, as chairman of ti: - Commission to Palestine. The precursor of the Jew- ish Agency, the Commission had quasi-governmental status and was recognized by the British Army which then administered the area. During a six-month stay in Palestine in 1919, Harry over the objections of many in the Yishuv, caused the commission to move its headquarters from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. There are con- flicting views on his motiva- tion, but one thing is clear: this cast the die for the sub- sequent establishment of - the City of David as modern Israel's capital. THE PREMIUM PASSOVER WINE Shumer said that arson against houses of worship was a citywide problem that involved churches as well as synagogues. But synagogues catering to the largely elderly and dwindling Jewish commu- nity on the Lower East Side appear to have been prime targets of late. The perpe: trators are believed to be youth gangs from the area or outside it. Arab Boycott Hits UK Jews LONDON — The Times of London reported last month that the Egyptian govern- ment will allow companies to "buy their way" off the Arab boycott list by invest- ing as much in Arab coun- tries as they do in Israel. - The report came out of an Arab economic conference that was held last November in Teheran. London's Sunday Tele- graph also reported thattfie British Department of Trade and Industry is pass- ing on to British firms a .demand by the Arab Boy- cott Office in Damascus to remove Jewish company di- rectors within 90 days. The demand is causing fears in Jewish banking circles. and other fields in Britain because of increas- ing business with the Arab world. The newspaper reported that a Jewish woman ac- countant with i firm of British architects may lose her job because the com- pany is doing most of its business in Saudi Arabia now, and non-Moslems must produce Christian baptism certificates in order to enter the country.
