The psychological depend-
ence of many of the editors
on the politicians actually
grew after the establish-
ment of the state. The secu-
rity situation then prevail-
ing increased the readiness
of the Comment Committee
to obey the national leaders'
instructions. The editors
were rewarded by a system
whereby the government
took the press selectively
into its confidence — on
condition that such confid-
ence was not betrayed by
publication.
Obviously, relations be-
tween government and
press established and de-
veloped during the Man-
date period ought to have
been changed radically
after the state came into
being. In fact, though, the
Comment Committee still
exists (since 1953 under
the title of the Editors
Committee).
In practice, the Israeli
press enjoys almost un-
trammeled freedom to re-
port and comment on all is-
sues save the military. The
government has not used
the legal powers it possesses
in order to drastically re-
strict the freedom of the
press. Yet the very existence
of laws that potentially
threaten the citizen's right
to know is considered unhe-
althy by many people.
