April 9, 1976 13 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Jewish Communal Structure Is Outlined in Children's Book By ALLEN A. WARSEN "For One Another" by Raymond A. Zwerin, pub- lished by the Union of 'American Hebrew Congre- gations and the American Association for Jewish Edu- cation, is a textbook in- tended for the "pupils of the target ages" and is aimed at imparting in children a knowledge of the Jewish philanthropic, social and educational institutions and to prepare them to partici- pate in Jewish communal life and work. To use the author's termi- nology, the book performs "the dual function of child education: exploration and experience at the child's stage of life and preparation for exploration and experi- ence in maturity." The book is composed of 11 chapters covering many aspects of Jewish communal concerns. Each chapter in- cludes suggestions for stu- dent activities and is preceded by a drawing re- lated to the subject matter. The chapters contain selections of famous quo- tations in English and Hebrew taken from the vast Jewish literature. For instance, the chapter "Jewish Big Brothers," among others, includes these quotations: ". . . Am I my brother's keeper?" (Genesis 4:9) and "„ Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethern to dwell together in un- ity." (Psalm 133:1). "As to the format, each chapter centers around a particular problem or event in which Jews, dither as a group in families, or as in- dividuals, might become in- volved and the way in which the various arms of the Jew- ENGAGED ish community might come to their aid." The chapter on Jewish education contains a chart of educational agencies — their names, sponsors, affi- liates, and publications. For example, the "Merkos L'In- yonay Chinuch," founded in 1942, is sponsored by the Lubavitcher Rebbe and his hasidim. It services day schools, camps, Chabad Lu- bavitch houses, and 20 re- gional offices worldwide. It publishes books and pam- phlets in 14 languages. The chart, however, left out teacher seminaries, rab- binical schools, colleges, and universities. These are em- bodied in the "Appendix" and are arranged in the form of a directory. "For One Another," Writ- ten in a simple narrative form, is interesting, impres- sive and absorbing. According to a report re- leased by Morton Weinfeld to the Canadian Jewish News, the 20 percent figure compares with five percent during World War II and 10 percent in 1965. Weinfeld said that he was surprised by one of his find- ings which showed that while mixed marriage rates in both Canada and the U. S. were growing, the mixed marriage rate among U. S. Jews was growing at a faster rate than in Canada. He said his data showed that the rate of mixed mar- riage in Canada was about half the figure in the U. S. which would make the lat- ter figure around 40 per- cent.
