Israel is a long way off so it makes
sense to make a stop on your way to
Tel Aviv. And there's no better place
to stop than in the heart of Europe—
Frankfurt, Germany. You can rest,
relax, shop, do a little business or
rent a car and do some sightseeing
in Europe's most beautiful scenery:
the Rhine Valley, the Black Forest,
the majestic Alps.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Am-
bassador Malcolm Toon has
warned Israel that it must
be as flexible as its security
needs permit lest Ameri-
cans come to feel — rightly
or wrongly — that the Is-
raeli government is stub-
born in its response to
American interests in the
Middle East.
The U.S. envoy was re-
sponding to a question as to
whether there was danger
of anti-Semitism in the U.S.
in reaction to Israeli poli-
cies. He said that anti-Israel
feelings could develop and
that some elements in the
U.S. may hold Jewry re-
sponsible for Israeli policies
they believed ran counter to
U.S. interests in the region.
He stressed, however,
that U.S.-Israel relations
were based on mutual prin-
ciples, ideals and interests
but he would not specify
exactly what those interests
are. Ambassador Toon said,
in reply to that question
that he believed it was in
America's interest for Israel
to be a free, independent
state and since that was also
Israel's national interest, it
covers everything.

Board of Rabbis
Honors Officer

NEW YORK — The New
York Board of Rabbis paid
tribute to Rabbi Harold H.
Gordon for his 30 years of
service as its executive vice
president during a testi-
monial dinner Thursday at
the New York Hilton Hotel.
Rabbi Gordon, a native of
Minneapolis, Minn., came to
the board in 1946, shortly
after his discharge as a ma-
jor from the U.S. Army Air
Force. Rabbi Gordon helped
expand the board to its pre-
sent 1,000 members, the
world's largest representa-
tive organization of rabbis,
with members throughout
the state of New York, New
Jersey and Connecticut.

Let the property of thy
friend be as dear to thee as
thine own.

Boycott vs. Public Morality

BY MARC TANNENBAUM

(Editor's Note: Rabbi
Tannenbaum is national
director of interreligious
affairs of the American
Jewish Committee. The
following was read on a
radio program in New
York.) _
The role of American big
business and major banks in
capitulating to the Arab
boycott against Israel and in
yielding to discrimination
against American Jews
raises some of the central
moral issues that agitated
our Founding Fathers about
what kind of democracy
they wanted America to be.
When one sees how some
200 American corporations
and 25 major banks are col-
laborating with the Arab
boycott in a brute campaign
to strangle economically a
small democratic society
called Israel, one under-
stand anew why the Ameri-
can , people increasingly
holds big business in such
low esteem.
This greedy grabbing
for the Arab petrodollar is
brought to us by some of
the same people who fi-
nancially supported
apartheid against blacks
in South Africa and who
have absolutely no moral
comPunctions about brib-

Big business, of course, is
the backbone of American
productivity and well-being
and deserves our support
when it behaves in a socially

responsible way.
If big business presists in
violating our basic demo-
cratic traditions, then Con-
gress has no alternative but
to enforce moral behavior
by strong anti-boycott legis-
lation.
