Payments Sought

WHY SETTLE
FOR LESS?

HAIFA — The chairman
of the World Jewish Federa-
tion of Victims of the Nazi
Regime, Tuviya Friedman,
has asked the president of
the Federation of German
Industries to institute nego-
tiations on compensating
surviving Jewish slave la-
borers, according to the Je-
rusalem Post.
In a letter to Hans Guen-
ter Sohl, Friedman noted
that during World War II
the German Nazis forced
two million Jews in occu-
pied Europe to do slave la-
bor for German industry.
Of these, only 80,000 sur-
vived the inhuman condi-
tions, which included 10 to
12 hours work daily, with-
out proper food or shelter.
Today, about 50,000 of these
survivors are still alive,
many of them living in Is-
rael.
Had the wartime German
industrialists put in a word
for the Jewish slave labor-
ers, as they did for the Poles
and other nationals — and
seen to it that they be
treated as humans — he
added, "at least another mil-
lion young Jews could have
survived the war, and not
just 80,000 living skeletons."
