Rhodesia's 4,000 Affluent Jews Ignore Dual Imminent Dangers

JERUSALEM — The
4,000 Jews in Rhodesia may
soon find themselves caught
between anti-Semitic
whites, who blame them for
the Communist danger, and
the blacks who may plunder
the property of the rich.
That prediction in the Je-
rusalem Post was Made by
the Chief Rabbi of Rhode-
sia, Rabbi Isaac Zwebner,
who immigrated to Israel
with his wife, Aurelia, re-
cently.
The last words of advice
that he gave to his congre-
gation in Bulawayo were
not a pleasant farewell. "I
held up a letter I had re-
ceived that was addressed
to the entire Rhodesian
Jewish community of 4,-
000." Stamped with an of-
ficial letterhead from the
white people's party, and
with swastikas, the letter
had quotations from 'Mein

Kampf' and threats that
`Hitler hasn't yet finished
his job.'
Swastikas have also ap-
peared of late on Jewish
shopwindows and cars.
The rabbi said the Jews of
Rhodesia don't want to
think about the danger.
With the pressure on
Rhodesia mounting in the
wake of the Marxist victory
in Angola and Mozambique,
said the rabbi, Prime Minis-
ter Ian Smith is "just play-
ing for time until the Euro-
peans of Rhodesia will be
forced to give in."
The Jews appear to be
fooled by the current quiet
before the storm. The
blacks, said Rabbi Zweb-
ner, are "still docile, -be-
cause they are primitive
people who haven't been
given the chance to de-
velop. But, like children
who are irresponsible

women, including the Jews,
don't even know how to iron
a shirt or fold a sheet. The
women overeat and then go
to the beauty salons to lose
weight."
Since it is difficult to take
money out of the country,
except for interest (house-
hold goods can still be sent
out), the Jews of Rhodesia
are afraid of starting life all
over again in Israel.
The Jews stay on,
spending their money on
grand synagogues, youth
centers and an old-age
home called the "Savyon
Lodge" which is on the

Changing Birthdays, Holidays

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

(Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.)

We found a friend wor-
ried the other day. His
birthday falls on Washing-
ton's birthday. Now that
they changed the day of
Washington's and Lincoln's
birthdays, he wondered
whether he was supposed
also to change his birthday.
They have not only
changed Washington's and
Lincoln's birthdays, they
seem to be going all out.
Some want to change the
Fourth of July to December
10. They say that in Decem-
ber the days are shorter, so
there wouldn't be such a
waste of firecrackers, which
is important now that the
President has told us we
must economize. But if you
change the Fourth of July to
the 10th of December, what

are you going to do with the
10th of December?
Some also are urging that
the secular New Year be
shifted from January to
September, when the Jew-
ish New Year occurs. This
would make it possible for
all people to hear the shofar.
The original weekly rest
day, as introduced by the
Jews was Saturday, the
seventh and last day of the
week, but the non-Jewish
world changed it to Sun-
day. That change was a
mistake. The Jews rightly
figure that you should
rest at the end of the week
when you are tired.
Some would like a change
of birthday because of the
Zodiac.
