Only four Jewish ball- players are on the 25-man rosters of the 24 major league baseball clubs. Four, that is, counting perennial American-League batting champ Rod Carew of the Minnesota Twins. Since his marriage to Marilynn Levy in 1970, Carew studied Judaism and only recently converted. In a game played last Sept. 15, Carew showed up at the ballpark but did not suit up citing illness as the reason. A Twins' official told me the reason that Carew didn't play that day was because it was Yom Kippur. "I guess," specu-. lated the club official, "Carew figured it would mean a lot less explain- ing." Other Jewish players in the American League are pitcher Ken Holtzman of the Oakland A's and Ron Blomberg, the Yankees' des- ignated hitter. The latter is the most ob- servant of the four and will not play on Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur. In- the National League, the lone Jewish player is Steve Stone, who posted a fine pitching record of 12 Served On A Sizzling Platter or BROILED FLORIDA RED SNAPPER 6 NIGHTS A WEEK — MONDAYS THRU SATURDAYS Complete Dinner Incl. Dam- age is estimated at $1 mil- lion. The shops were located in a large commercial center and in two adjacent textile warehouses that were filled with merchandise for the winter season. Sources said most of the destroyed shops were not insured against fire and that the insurance on others would not cover the full losses.
