2$ April 2, 1976 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Historian Says U.S. Will See a Jewish Vice President NEW ORLEANS, La. — A prominent American Jewish historian and rabbi predicted that, on the basis of historic trends, the United States will have a Jewish vice presidential can- didate within the next 25 years. - Speaking at the 1976 Biennial Convention of the National Jewish Welfare Board at the Fairmont Ho- tel in New Orleans, Rear Admiral Bertram W. Korn, Chaplain Corps, U.S. Naval Reserve, said, "Two Jews serving as U.S. Senators in the period before the Civil War, followed by two Jews serving at the same time on the U.S. Supreme Court prior to World War II, and two Jews serving, simulta- neously in the President's Cabinet during the Kennedy Administration, foresha- dow the ultimate political achievement of equality of Jews. "None of these offices was achieved because the man was a Jew, but because each had ability and talent the nation needed desperately. Unless some severe political upheaval occurs in the near future, one of our parties, probably the Republicans, will nominate a Jew for the office of vice president." Admiral Korn is the first Jewish chaplain in Ameri- ca's 200-year history to reach two-star rank in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. At the same time, a noted Jewish scholar and educator has challenged Jews and Judaism to make a contri- bution to American civiliza- tion in the years ahead. Rabbi Emanuel Rack- man, spiritual leader of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue of MK Tamir Predicts U.S. Will Increase Pressure on Israel NEW YORK (JTA) — Shmuel Tamir, a member of Israel's Knesset and chair- man of the Free Center Party, a faction of Likud, said that "Israel's arm is going to be twisted," by the United States and predicted thit American pressure on Israel will increase in months to come. Tamir made this assess- ment following a week-long meeting in Washington with top U.S. officials, at a luncheon .sponsored by the New York Regional Board of the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith. Ac- cording to Tamir, the mood in Congress is running against Israel, though he said, "Capitol Hill is still friendly to Israel." He said that Israel has to "pursue and convince" Con- gress now for things that were taken for granted in the past. This change in Congress, Tamir noted, is due to the new generation of young Congressmen who do not have "the Holocaust guilt feeling" and who take a "rational attitude" toward issues such as the "oil cri- sis." Tamir warned that the new American initiative to end the state of belliger- ency between Israel and the Arabs — replacing the aim of full peace as the next step for a Mideast so- lution — will result in _"a unilateral Israeli with- drawal in a short time" with no Arab concessions. The Israeli MK, said that no official in Washington could explain to him what non-belligerency means. "This is a vague, meaning- less term," Tamir said, add, ing that giving up the aim of full peace in the Mideast "is the greatest mistake in the last 28 years." To achieve peace in the Mideast, Tamir said, Israel will have to make territorial concessions. He added, how- ever, that Israelis are as far from peace today as they ever were. New York and' professor of Jewish studies, City Univer- sity of New York, said: "In the 18th Century — in 1776 and 1776 and prior thereto —'it was Judaism, not Jews, that had great influence on American life and thought. In the 20th Century, it was Jews, rather than Judaism, that had the input. "A significant challenge to Jews in the third century of our nation's history is whether Jews and their Ju- Wiesenthal Baiter Is Found Guilty BONN — An ultra-right wing German radical leader' named Roeder, who claimed that Auschwitz never ex- isted and that Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal had never been in a concentra- tion camp, has been sent- enced to seven months in prison for slander and "racial incitement." The sentence was then suspended for three years, but Roeder could be jailed during that period if he is- sues slanderous statements. Roeder was also ordered to pay DM 3,000 to the Red Cross and also pay the trial costs. Roeder's supporters cursed and spit at Wiesenthal last fall after Wiesenthal testi- fied at the trial.
