DR. SHLOMO BARDIN
BY BORIS SMOLAR

Zip

A new Jewish cultural
project of great dimensions
is coming into life this year
somewhere in the green
meadows in the New York
area. Its aim is to provide
Jewish knowledge for
adults, strengthen Jewish
identity of college youth,
and give basic Jewish educa-
tion to children of school age
in a totally Jewish atmos-
phere. -
The institution — which
will be built by a single do-
nor — will be named after
the late U.S. Supreme Court
Justice Louis D. Brandeis
who was deeply interested
in' strengthening Jewish
identity among Jews in this
country. It will be known as
Brandeis Institute of the
East.
The Brandeis Institute of
the East is intended for
Jews from the New York
area as well as from New
Jersey, Pennsylvania, New
England and other areas
from where the institution
can be reached easily.
The acquisition of the
land and other prop - erty
for the Brandeis Institute
of the East is. Ei one-man
generosity act. This man is
Abraham GOodinan, the
well-known philanthropist
whose deep interest in
Jewish education is end-
less.
, It was more than 30 years
ago that Goodman also ac-
quired the land on which the
Brandeis Institute in Cali-
fornia stands now. He pre-
sented it as a gift to the in-
stitution of which he bas
been proud all these years.
The Institute became a Jew-
ish landmark in America. It
has been directed very ably
by Dr. Shlomo Bardin, the
"father" of the idea.
A prominent educator of
nationwide reputation, Dr.
Bardin succeeded in attract-
ing to his institution college
youths from all parts of the
country.
Born in the small town of
Gritzev, in Russia, Good-
man received a solid He-
brew education which beca-
me implanted in him for
life. He is a generous contri-
butor to many Jewish
causes and does important
work for Israel. But his
greatest love is education,
especially Hebrew educa-
tion.
Together with his
brother, Jack, he estab-
lished a million-dollar
foundation some 12 years
ago which has greatly con-
