THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 6 Friday, March 26, 1976 Arab Mayors Rescind Resignations as Violence Subsides TEL AVIV (JTA) — Some West Bank mayors who re- signed during the past three weeks, are trying to strike a bargain with Israeli author- ities. Haj Maazouz El-Mas- rihmet, the mayor of Na- blus, the largest West Bank town, reportedly offered to withdraw his resignation if Israeli military forces are thinned out and the curfews in Ramallah and El-Birch are lifted. But the military governor reportedly insisted that the XXXXXXXXX)< x Between 13 A 14We XXXXXXXXXXXXX r mayor withdraw his resig- nationwith no pre-condi- tions. Shops in Nabulus have remained closed for five straight days. The mayor said he might be able to per- suade the merchants to re- open. The mayor of Jenin, who also resigned some weeks ago, is promising to restore normal life and or- der in that town. Some Is- raeli troops have been with- drawn. There were indications, meanwhile, that Jordan is as interested as Israel in ending the wave of dis- turbances and demonstra- tions on the West Bank. Aman's motives coincide at least in part with those of Israel — to check the in- fluence of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Jordania-n authorities have called on West Bank leaders loyal to King Hus- sein to try to cool the situa- tion as the date for West Bank municipal elections approaches. The government has not yet responded. The church group based its appeal on the argument that punishment should not have the character of per- manent vengeance and that the - three prisoners were now physical wrecks. They said that the argu- ment made four years ago that freeing the Nazi war a criminals would cause men- tal suffering to their surviv- a ing victims, no longer ap- cr plied because there was now a psychiatric clinic headed trt by Prof. Johann Bastiaans 0 which was established for 0 the purpose of helping the victims of Nazi war crimes. When the appeal was made on behalf of the war criminals in 1972, the gov- ernment promised it would not release the prisoners without prior consultation with Parliame-ht and with the various Dutch resist- ance organizations. The resistance groups, Jewish congregations and Communist spokesmen have all reacted sharply against the Council of Churches' appeal: AMSTERDAM (JTA) — The Netherlands govern- $ 10 95 +tax 0 0- O w of the most moderate West Bank leaders.
