More than 500 attended
the annual Landsmanshaf-
ten Purim Celebration
which honored Mr. and Mrs.
William Levin, leaders in
the Jewish National Fund
for 30 years, with the plant-
ing of a woodland of 2,500
trees, to be known as the
"William and Belle Levin
Woodland", in the Ameri-
can Bicentennial National
Park in Israel.
The park, which is a sa-
lute to the 200th anniver-
sary of United States inde-
pendence, is located in the
Judean Mountains, south-
west of Jerusalem.
The Levins also were
presented with a citation of
honor by Mark E. Schlussel,
president of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund, "for exemplary
service to the Jewish Na-
tional Fund Reclamation
and Afforestation Program
in Israel thus forging an
eternal link with the soil of
the Jewish homeland".
Diane Levine, president of
Women of JNF, presented
them with Chai trees.
A highlight of the occa-
sion was the adress by Dr.
Judah J. Shapiro, presi-
dent of the Labor Zionist
Alliance and editor of the
New Frontier.
Dt. Shapiro answered
those enemies who claim
Israel is not viable. "Israel is
10.times as viable as Egypt
or Jordan. It has 10 times
their per capita income . . .
if Israel could reduct its de-
fense expenditures by 10 per
cent, it would not need our
help."
declared:
Shapiro
"Nothing will take the
place of the solid work
which Jewish National
Fund has done for 75 years
and continues to do."
Abe Dishell, chairman of
the Landsmanshaften Com-
mittee for JNF, was chair-
man of the event.
The honorees were in-
troduced by Jack Drapkin,
brother of Belle Levin.
Morris Lieberman, chair-
man of the Detroit Ilistad-
rut Campaign, introduced
