Sephardi Leaders
Meet Spanish King

NEW YORK — A delega-
tion of the World Sephardi
Federation recently met
with the new King of Spain
Juan Carlos I in Madrid.
The members of the dele-
gation were Nessim D.
Gaon, president of the
World Sephardi Federation;
the Haham Dr. Solomon
Gaon; Solomon A. Seruya,
member of the Israel Execu-
tive of the World Sephardi
Federation; Maitre Albert
Benatar, president of the
federation branch in
France; Daniel da Silva So-
lis, member of the Amster-
dam Sephardi Community
Board; David Ventura, pres-
ident of the Barcelona Corn-
triunity; and Philip Halioua,
president of the Madrid
Community.
King Juan Carlos ac-
cepted a rare copy of the
Ferrara Bible in Old Span-
ish from the ,library of the
Sephardi Community in
Amsterdam.
The king was informed
that at a recent meeting in
Torremolinos the represent-
atives of the Jewish commu
nities of Spain and the lead-
ers of the World Sephardi
Federation decided to open
a branch of the World Se-
phardi Federation in Spain.

Herman still has two
datighters and a sister living
in Russia. His father, Sam
Herman, was born in Russia
and came to the United
States in 1909. A dedicated
communist who fought to
organize labor unions in
Detroit, Sam Herman had
dreamed of returning to
Russia after the czarist ov-
erthrow.
Finally in 1931, he was of-
fered a job in Russia. He
took his wife and three of
his four children — Victor,
Leo and Meriam. Becky,
married, stayed in Detroit.

DR. JAY STERN

Dr. Jay Stern, superin-
tendent of the United He-
brew School of Metropolitan
Detroit, was elected na-
tional president of the Edu-
cator's Assembly.
Founded in 1948 the Edu-
cator's Assembly is the
professional organization of
educators serving in after-
noon schools, day schools
and camping programs affi-
liated with United Syn-
agogue of America.
Dr. Stern was previously
vice president and chairman
of the ethics committee of
the assembly. The organiza-
tion is involved in educator
placement, educational re-
search, the maintenance of
professional standards for
educational personnel and
the development of a na-
tional forum for Jewish edu-
cation in America.
