husband to his wife, in rec-
ognition of her literary ac-
complishments, is contained
in "The Pulse of the Mortal
Clock."
The book is a collection of
poems by Rhoda Zahavie
Shames. The tribute to her
is in the form of a review by

Joshua Shames.
Mrs. Shames has made
poetry and short story writ-
ing her life's hobby and it
has developed into a career.
In her introduction she
waxes philosophical about
her love for the poetic and
for the narrative.

Similarly, her husband's
tribute is replete with.admi-
ration for a dedicated per-
son's achievements.

The consistency with
which Mrs. Shames has pur-
sued her love for writing,
with which she attained the
imaginative and the verses
and narratives, is imbedded
in this work which expres-
sively extends the bookshelf
she has created with her
published works.

PLO Discloses
Plan to Eliminate
State of Israel

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — The Palestine Lib-
eration Organization dis-
closed its plan to eliminate
the state of Israel by over-
whelming it demographi-
cally. According to Zehdi
Labib Terzi, the PLO ob-
server at the UN, all that is
required is the return of Pa-
lestinian refugees to the
homes and property they
left in 1948 and 1949, a right
which Terzi claims is inher-
ent in UN resolutions.
"That return would alter
the demographic balance in
Israel to such an extent that
it would destroy its (Is-
rael's) Zionist exclusionist
character," Terzi said. Once
back in their homes, the
Palestinians would "ex-
ercise their inalienable right
to self-determination, na-
tional independence and
sovereignty," he said.
Terzi unveiled the
PLO's strategy in an ap-
pearance before the Com-
mittee on the Exercise of
the Inalienable Rights of
the Palestinian People
which was established by
the General Assembly last-
fall over the objections of
the U.S. and Israel. Israel
said it does not- recognize
the committee and will not
be bound by any recom-
mendations it may pro-
duce. Of the 20 member
nations, only two have dip-
lomatic relations with Is-
rael.
The PLO spokesman said
the plan would require two
stages — first the return of
refugees who left the Gaza
Strip and West Bank in the
1967 war to be followed by
the return of all Palestini-
ans to what is now Israel.

To know the disease is the
commencement of the cure.

Orthodox Rabbis Condemn
Jerusalem Inter-Faith Talks

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Two leading Orthodox rab-
bis have condemned the re-
cent inter-faith dialogue
held in Jerusalem between a
Vatican delegation and the
International Jewish Com-
mittee for Interreligious
Consultations, which is
headed by another promi-
nent Orthodox rabbi, Rabbi
Joseph Lookstein, Chancel-
lor of Bar-Ilan University.
In a statement issued
here, Rabbi Moshe Fein-
stein, president of the Union
of Orthodox Rabbis of the
United States and Canada,
charged that the dialogue
was "hilul hashem" (dis-
grace of God's name) and
said he was amazed that
rabbis in Israel "instead of
voicing a strong protest
against the bringing of a
new idolatry in the Holy
Land, met personally with
the delegation from the Vat-
ican."
Rabbi Feinstein's view
was supported by Rabbi

Israel at Cologne
Furniture Exhibit

BONN — Seven firms
from Israel made their first
appearance at the Interna-
tional Furniture Fair in Col-
ogne. This had been made
possible by the new agree-
ment between the European
Community and Israel.
Israeli furniture manu-
facturers began building up
their exports in the mid-;six-
ties.

Joseph Soloveitchik of Bos-
ton, who said he was deeply
disappointed that the dia-
logue with the Vatican
group was welcomed in Is-
rael with great "enthu-
siasm."
The Union of Orthodox
Rabbis also issued a state-
ment explaining why it
refused to participate in
the second World Confer-
ence on Soviet Jewry held
in Brussels last month.
The chief reason given
was that the organization
does "Not participate in
such public international
conferences where the To-
rah word does not domi-
nate." The BrUssels confer-
ence, they said, was
"dominated by a secular
spirit."
