Conference met with Israeli
Ambassador Simcha Dinitz
who repeated Israel's strong
opposition to the sale.
Schindler, who only re-
cently became chairman,
said he wants to make the
Presidents Conference
more effective. He said he
would like to limit meet-
ings such as the one com-
ing up with the President
to six-to-ten people so it
could be less "ceremonial"
and more an exchange of
views.

He said he would like to
have leaders of organiza-
tions not included in the
Presidents conference, such
as the United Jewish Appeal
and the Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare
Funds, to be part of a com-
mittee to meet monthly and
discuss issues.
He said he hoped the
group would be "more deli-
berative than reactive" al-
though it would react as is-
sues come up. He also said
he hopes to add one staff
member to deal with na-
tional activities in the New
York area.
Schindler said he also
plans to go to Israel March
27 and has asked, unlike
previous official visits of the
Presidents Conference, to
meet with a wider audience
than Israeli government
leaders. He said he asked
for meetings with the Knes-
set Foreign Affairs and Se-
curity Committee, which
includes members of all
major parties; kibbutz sec-
retaries, members of the
Manufacturers' Association,
the Histadrut, army officers
and newspaper editors. "I

want to hear from a wider
Israel," he said.
Meanwhile, in New
York, two Zionist leaders
greeted Egyptian Presi-
dent Sadat's statement
ending ties with Russia
with skepticism. Mrs.
Faye Schenk, chairman of
the American Zionist Fed-
eration, stated: "The tim-
ing of this latest act is too
close to the scheduled
United States Administra-
tion request for arms sales
to Egypt not to be- viewed
as an Egyptian attempt to
involve itself in American
politics for military gain."
Dr. Judah J. Shapiro,
president of the Labor Zion-
ist Alliance, said that de-
spite Sadat's announce-
ment, the situation remains
the same as far as Israel is
concerned regarding a re-
armed Egypt. "The United
States should not be a re-
placement fot the Soviet
Union in the supply of arms
to Egypt that could be
turned against Israel," he
stated.
The LZA, Dr. Shapiro
added, "supports every form

PARIS (JTA) — Official
French sources say that
France will sell Egypt 120
French-German-built Alpha
jet aircraft and the French
made Atar engine that can
be installed in Egypt's So-
viet-made MIG jets when
their original engines wear
out. The deal was concluded
following a visit by Egyp-
tian Air Force commander
Vice-Marshall Mohammed
Shaker Abdel-Monein.
The Egyptians have al-
ready purchased French
Mirage fighter planes and
are reportedly interested in
setting up a plant in Egypt
to assemble the Alpha jet.
They are also seeking to
purchase the sophikicated
_ Mirage F-1 jets, powered by
Atar engines and the Mi-
rage III.
Egypt is said to need
some 200 modern combat
aircraft to replace its 1973
war losses. They also want

girls of Bar and Bat Mitzva age are given a Bar Mitzva Party, just like
you had. Because of the high costs of this project we must depend on
you for your help and support. By donating a small part of your cash

Egypt rebuild its war ar-

Egypt is urgently in need
of spare engines for its MIG
combat planes. Since the So-
viet Union has refused to
supply them, Cairo is seek-
ing the replacements from
Western sources.
The former commander
of the Israeli Air Force,
Gen. Mordechai Hod, said
recently that the U.S.
planned to sell Egypt J-79

that any such sale was being
considered.

PROVIDENCE, RI (JTA)
— The first comprehensive
guide to the Rhode Island
Jewish community has been
published by the young
women's division of the Jew-
ish Federation of Rhode Is-
land as part of a new divi-
sion project to identify and
welcome Jewish newcomers
to Rhode Island.
Joyce Starr, president of
the division, said new cou-
ples are invited to homes in
the area where they live, for
an informal opportunity to
meet their neighbors and to
learn about the organized
Jewish community.
The "Shalom Rhode Is-
land" booklet includes a
short history of the commu-
nity; a map of the state with
locations of Jewish institu-
tions; and a directory of
community and social serv-
ices, congregations, organi-
