Duckwitz, a Ger- man shipping official in Denmark during World War II, was announced recently during an official visit to the institute by German For- eign Minister Hans Dietrich Genscher. It was Duckwitz's warn- ing to the Danish under- ground of the impending deporation of Danish Jews that made it possible for them to escape from the country before they could be arrested by the Nazis. The first incumbent of the Duckwitz Chair is Prof. Yosel Aloni of the institute's Department of Genetics. Jews in Galilee Concern Rivlin JERUSALEM (JTA) — Moshe Rivlin, director gen- eral of the Jewish Agency, expressed serious concern that the Jewish population in Galilee may remain a minority because the Agency was unable to pro- vide the industrial plants and educational facilities necessary to increase Jew- ish settlement there because of lack of funds. Rivlin, addressing mem- bers of a United Jewish Appeal study mission headed by Leonard Strelitz, of Norfolk, Va., said the Agency was currently una- ble to meet those needs be- cause last year's fund-rais- ing goals in the U.S. were not reached while prices in Israel continued to soar. He said it was impossible for the government to as- sume the Jewish Agency's responsibilities because the government was already spending a third of Israel's gross national product on defense, a proportion une- qualled even by Britain at the peak of the German blitz in World War II. Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, president of the AJ Con- gress, said the assurances had been obtained as part of a nationwide drive, launched by the American Jewish Congress last De- cember, to require major U.S. companies to tell their shareholders whether they were participating in the Arab boycott of Israel. Israel Focusing on Lebanon Events JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel once again is focusing attention on events in Leba- non where a military coup has- been _carried out by Moslem army deserters headed by Brig. Gen. Abdel Aziz al-Ahdab. Premier Yit- zhak Rabin and Defense Minister Shimon Peres dis- cussed the situation at a, weekend meeting attended by military and political experts on Lebanese affairs. Israeli army units are patrolling the 120-kilometer border with Lebanon in in- creased strength from Rosh Hanikra on the Mediterra- nean coast to Metullah, Is- rael's northernmost settle- ment. The border has been om- inously quiet of late al- though there is tension in villages on both sides. Shooting has been heard on the, Lebanese side but there have been no attacks on Is- raeli targets from Lebanon., However, Moslem army de- serters have occupied sev- eral strongpoints on heights overlooking Metullah creat- ing at least a potential men- ace. and occupy Lebanon there is little Israel can do. The pol- itical situation, especially Israel's currently very sensi- tive relations with Washing- ton, precludes any preven- tive action by Israeli forces. Israeli border settle- ments, however, are clamor- ing for some kind of action since they would be the first targets should Palestinian zealots turn the hitherto Damascus sponsors the seven-regiment Palestine Liberation Army which ap- parently can manipulate events in Lebanon to Syria's ends without the risk of di- rect Syrian military inter- vention. So far, the Syrians have made no overt moves. But they engineered the Lebanese cease-fire last month in which the Moslems gained ascendency over the Chris- tian population.
