I had an opportunity to
travel to Mexico during this
period of readjustment. I
went with two specific ques-
tions which I felt were on
the minds of many Jews
besides myself.
One question was how the
Mexican Jewish community
fared during the recent
problem. The second was
what does Mexico offer the
Jewish traveler. I got my an-
swers and they were both
surprising and pleasing.
Mexico's Jews went
through many of the same
agonies as America's Jews
after the UN vote on Zion-
ism. Their anxieties had to

be greater than ours be-
cause it was their govern-
ment that was involved.
Fortunately, high ranking
Mexican government offi-
cials moved quickly to as
sure the Jews of Mexico that
their welfare was of the ut-
most importance and asked
that they not be unduly con-
cerned. Most of Mexico's
Jews agreed that the UN
vote was not a personal af-
front to them.
I talked to a number of
Mexican Jews, both commu-
nity leaders and business-
men. I found• a great simi-
larity in their thoughts on
recent events.
Mexico's Jews relate to
their country and their reli-
gion in the same manner as
their U.S. and Canadian
counterparts. They are Mex-
icans first and Jews second.
They are secure in a society
that has seen them prosper
on a par with any Jewish
community in the world,
and they have prospered as
Jews.
They have not hidden
their Jewish identity, or
denied their - Jewish heri-
tage. Seventy-five percent
of Mexico's Jews are reli---
giously affiliated and 65
percent of their children
go to Jewish day schools.
Anti-Semitism is vir-
tually unknown in Mexico
and, unlike American Jews, -
they have never been faced
with "no Jews allowed."
That includes job opportuni-
ties and housing, as well as
social organizations and
country clubs.
Where do the Jews of
Mexico stand on the so-
called travel boycott of Mex-
